E-FLITE 25
« on: December 07, 2017, 01:03:45 PM »
Hi Guys   I would like to know if a 5 cell battery is appropriate for this motor?  Also I have a Castle lite 50 and a 75 lite available.  Is the 50 okay or should I use the 75?  Lastly I will use a Hubin timer.   Any opinions on the fwd vs. rear mount system??  Thanks for your help.

The Power 25 is an excellent choice.I use the 870 KV version which the manufacturer limits to 4 cells. Front mounted using Bob Hunt's G10 composite firewall. As far as the ESC, go with the one that the has safety of higher spike capability(likely the CC 75). It'll weigh more. If you can find a discontinued  Phoenix 45 somewhere, they're great- light weight and can handle a 60 amp spike.
If you want to run a 5 cell pack, look into Cobra motors.

Roy, you may or may not have seen my Chipmunk last summer.  It has the set up you mention, Edge Lite 50 ESC.  Like was mentioned, you will be limited to 4 cells.  You need the E-flite 32 to use 5 cells.  Front or rear mount is OK, I have used both in the past.  This particular model is a rear mount 25.

What size battery are you guys using??  The biggest I've seen in a 4 cell with a reasonable weight is 2800 ma.  The model I'm planning to built is about 670 squares.  Thanks

Roy, The likely anticipated flying weight and size for any typical design at 670 squares is probably going to be asking for more juice than what a 2800 4 cell can provide to allow a full pattern.  I would venture that 2800-4s is highly optimistic and 3300-4s is more realistic.

What KV is your Power 25?  870kv or 1250kv?

A 2700-5s battery would likely be just fine for your application if the weight is kept in check.  As Mike Haverly mentioned, the Power 32 would get it done very well.  You could look also at the Cobra C-3515/18 Brushless Motor, Kv=740, Cobra C-3520/14 Brushless Motor, Kv=700, Cobra C-3520/12 Brushless Motor, Kv=820, or anything similar in size and Kv rating.

Make sure to read the "list your setup" thread.  That will give you a lot of information and let you see what is working for other flyers.

Hi Fred    I guess I would probably start 65 feet, eyelet to eyelet, and work from there.

Hi Brent    The eflite 25 is a  870.    I've been flying a Vector 40 powered by a Cobra 2826-12  760 kv, castle 50 lite, hubin timer and 2650 Turnigy 4s.  The set up was made using the Norms cookbook.  Understand I do not understand all the whys and wherefores about this electric stuff.  Anyhow,  the early flights of 51/2 minutes would use about 55% of the battery.  Over time, the batteries started to have less energy left at end of the flight.  Maybe the model is consuming more power??  This last season I finally got to do some flights and it seemed like I was loosing line tension.  I have one hyperion 2500 4s that I tried and it was like adding 10% nitro.  I decided to scrap the turnigy batteries reather than waste money shipping them to Arizona.  Then the TP sale came about and I ordered four new 2800 4s for the Vector 40.  Figuring on that, I thought maybe a five cell would be okay for a bigger model.  So I ordered some 2800 5s and a new charger.  I just happen to have a e-flite 25, I didn't know it was limited to 4 cells.  I guess I will need to buy another motor or get some bigger mill 4s??

Thank you fellas for your help.  Hopefully, this will generate some more comments..............

Roy, just get an E-flite 32 and lash it up the five cell system and you will be good to go.  The Ice Lite 50 would work but the 75 gets you more head room.  I've been using that system for about five years on 690 sq. in. airplanes.

E-flite 32 or Cobra equivalent as noted above with work well with 2700 or 2800 5s and non-active timer.  The other consideration with the smaller lighter motor is that some have to add ballast to the front.  The Castle 50 should be fine.  You have both 50 and 75 amp, flip a coin.

You can use line length, or lap time/rpm to help with battery usage.

I have Zippy and TP batteries.  Both loose capacity with cycles, so percent usage goes up as capacity goes down.  TPs start at 2800 and loose more slowly, making them a good buy when on a good sale.  I am mostly flying TPs, but if you are at or above 20% at the end of a flight, I don't think that the motor will know what is feeding it.

I have ran the E-flite 32 / 5 cell / Active timer with good results on my Legacy.

Timer:    Igors Timer
ESC:      Jeti 66
Battery: TP 5S 2700 25C
Prop:    Igors 11x5C hollow prop (repitched to 5.5")

and also in my Saturn (650 sq in) with Cobra 3520-12 and Castles Icelite 50.

Timer: Fiorotti (Early version) 4.4
ESC:      Castles Icelite 50
Battery:  Same as above  5S 2700
Prop:    Arks 11x5.5 Wood 3-blade
