So -- I wonder if that was cause or effect? It sure looks like the edges of the hole are kinda sharp-sided, and rubbing plus sharp sides could have taken out the red wire. But the damage to the black wire looks like there was some pulling involved, too. If it was loose and flopping around that would have caused growl and wire damage both. OHOH, if the wires were damaged for some other reason, it may have caused the growl.
It's repairable, if you're handy with taking motors apart and soldering wires.
