prop comes loose
« on: March 08, 2025, 10:30:23 AM »
On a D3528 900V electric motor, the prop keeps coming off. The aluminum collet tightens onto the motor shaft as the prop is tightened. But even though I tighten it so hard that it seems close to stripping, the prop comes off at full throttle. I thought of roughening the motor shaft, but seems to be a hardened material. Thought of using temporary thread locker on motor shaft, but would probably make it very difficult to replace prop. What do other people do?

Dave, I have this problem on a BA 2320 that is front mounted and uses a collet type prop drive. I would tighten the prop nut to what seemed to be really tight, but it would slip on the motor shaft. I tried several different brands of collet mount and all were the same. I tried to open the slits in the collet and still would slip. Roughening with a dermal cutting wheel can help. What finally solved it for me was to keep the motor can from rotating while I got it tighten down the prop nut. On my motor/ship (profile) I used a thin rod (like 1/16" dia) that would slip through the back of the motor can air outlets (be careful that it does not touch the windings). This allowed that last half turn and got the collet tight to the shaft. If you have room a strap wrench around the could also work. I just saw a short video about using a piece of strap wrapped around a muffler and taking a pair of channel lock pliers to pinch it lose to the part and roll it back like a commercial strap wrench to loosen it. Could do the opposite to tighten if space is tight to get the commercial wrench in.

Best,    DennisT

This really works.  I have had the same issue on the 35xx as well.  I put a hole in the bottom cowl now for the wire so I don't have the take it off.  Glad you posted this.  I forgot the holes in my twin.  Works for rear mounts too.  Keeping the motor quiet while tightening the prop nut.

If it is not broke you are not trying hard enough.

The collet should slip on to the shaft with a little friction or at least no observable clearance. If it's a rattle fit, it will never hold well. Lubricate the thread before tightening. Never resorted to anything more, but I have seen junk collets and threads with a lot of friction.

Left-handed props need left-handed prop nuts.  This is an option that the motor-makers should offer.  It's also an opportunity for machinists looking for a product.

While you're waiting, tighten it good and use Nylock.

Sometimes there is a little flashing on the inside of the collet from machining the slots. You can knock it off with a small square file. Clean the collet and shaft with acetone to remove oil.  I have seen collets made with bad tapers and sometimes the drive washer is made from soft material and spreads when you tighten it. You can put a dab of loctite on the shaft but tighten it before it dries. I don't like to hold the can for final tightening because it's so easy to bend the aluminum part.

The more you tighten the collet, the more you expand the collet. With the proper fitting collet and shaft, you only need to tighten the collet till snug. Collets are used daily to hold work or a cutter on a lathe or mill with significantly larger forces. Surface area is everything!

I hold the prop while tightening the prop nut on the collet. If I detect the whole prop adapter turning independent of the prop, I make a washer out of thin cardboard or gasket paper and put it between the prop and adapter to add friction. Then you can turn the nut good and tight. However, do watch out for any "steps" on the prop adapter shaft that would allow the prop to seat before it pushes the backplate drawing the collet into it's tapered seat : I've had this happen also.

Cheers,
