Title: Prop Collar puller
Post by: Dennis Toth on July 27, 2020, 12:39:26 PM
After the nose over that toasted the motor I need to remove and replace in my Stuka. This is a full fuse front mount with spinner installation. The spinner nose ring only has about 1 3/8" ish opening. The prop collar is about 5/8" diameter, doesn't leave much room to get something behind the collar edge to pull it free. When space is not a problem I use a gear puller but the jaws are to big to get inside the opening. Anybody got a simple way or tool to pull these?

This is what I use.  Maybe you can find a similar one.

Chris,
Thanks Chris, looks like what I need. What are the rough dimensions? I found one be need to know if it will fit in the nose ring area before I pay for the expedited shipping.

I use what Crist uses and was going to recommend the same another thing Ive used a few time that might work depending on the shaft is a battery terminal puller. A windshield wiper arm puller may work too though Ive never tried one. I have used battery terminal pullers to pop windshield wiper arms.

It's about 1 inch wide by 13/16 high.  I rounded the bottom corners a bit so it fits a little easier into the nose ring cut out.

Crist,
If you get a chance please post a picture of how you modified the Hyperion Collet Puller. I found one and it should get here Friday (so is the replacement motor). Since the weekend looks like we are getting a tropical rain event I'll have time to get the Stuka ready to go.

Thanks Crist, that's what I thought it would be but always good to see one that was done. I think this will be good information for the group.

The Hyperion collet puller arrived today, it took longer to open the package then it did to pop off the collet. Tool works great I was able to just slide it behind the hub there was enough room without gridding the edges. One thing I recommend is once you put the cross bar into the threaded push bolt you put a small slice (like 1/16") of fuel tubing or a small "O" ring over the free end of the bar to prevent it from sliding out. It comes with a slide in piece that fits into a groove in the base of the tool, it seems to be the same size as the base opening, maybe you slip that down around the other half of the collet to completely encircle it? I did not do that just slipped the tool behind lined up the screw with the shaft and in half a turn pop off it came.

Crist, thanks again for recommending this tool.

The plate is used for smaller collars.

I had a similar issue trying to remove a prop collar. I made this out of 2 plate washers and some screws. It's a bit crude but it worked fine.

Now that's what I call true model building ingenuity.   y1
