Jus' Curious...

Anybody know why this little Cherrios donut is attached to my ICE 50 timer cord? Obviously done during construction as the connecter wouldn't fit through the hole!

It's a ferrite bead, there to prevent RF from escaping the ESC and messing up reception on your 72MHz receiver.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

...and if you carefully fuss with it you can remove it by runnig the connector back through it.

Tim and Denny are both correct, I remove them and have had no issues.  But put it back in if you go R/C with the ESC.

It doesn't look to me like that particular bead could pass the ESC connector housing.  You could pull the contacts from the housing and then unwind things -- but I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you already knew how or had some spare housings (the little latches on the housing tend to break unless you're very careful about holding them back when you pull the contacts).

Can one take a cold chisel to the ferrite?

Other than a few grams weight, there's no harm in leaving the bead in place. H^^

IIRC it's pretty strong stuff -- but if you give it a hard enough whack it'll come loose.

That's a lot of effort for a very little weight, though.

How much is a gram worth to you?  Are you consistent about what you'll pay?

Or maybe one big one.  I'll try to find one of those things that's not in a plastic blob and see what it takes to destroy it.

I just cut the wire, remove the ring and join it with some heat shrink tubing. The wire is usually too long anyway and you normally end up winding it up.
