Possessed CC Phoenix 45 ESC ? SOLVED
« on: October 02, 2011, 07:33:39 AM »
Guys,
Yesterday I had a problem with my CC Phoenix 45 ESC (CL mode - Set RPM @9200, running a Ztron II timer set for 100% throttle in all three settings,TP 4S1P 3900 Pro Lite pack), controlling a Hacker 30XL10 motor. I was doing some testing of the pusher vs. tractor props, had just done two 30 sec test flights with the pusher, after the second test flight I change two wires on the motor to reverse the motor direction; put on the tractor prop and did another 30sec test of the tractor prop, all went normal. Once I landed I wanted to do another test flight of the tractor prop, did not change anything, just let it sit about 30 sec after shutting off the power switch. On power up the ESC beeped as normal, 20 sec delay as I went to the handle then it got possessed!! The motor had reversed direction, it came up to just before full power and shut down. I tested it on the bench and changed props so that it had a prop for the direction it was spinning and powered up, the static amps went over 47 and it shut down (normal amps for this prop is around 34). I talked to my friend  Robert C and he had experienced problems with the CC45. He got a timer from Will Hubbert that has a voltage regulator built in to eliminated a voltage spike that seemed to fry the ESC.

I have run this timer and ESC for a little over 2 years with an AXI2826-10 motor with no problem, I only have 4 flights on the Hacker 30XL10 when this happened. Is this something particular to the Hacker motors? Has anyone had this happen? Could it happen in the air (real bad thing)?

Best.  DennisT

Dennis,
I had one "bug out" or "crash" on my son's plane once when I was plugging in and didn't get it quite right and lost the connection for a fraction of a second. I hooked it up to my castle link and all the settings were gone like it was erased. I loaded it back up and it worked fine ever since. So you may want to try reloading it to see what happens. You probably have nothing to lose.

Hi Dennis,
It's just not possible for the timer to "fry" the ESC.
The other way around ... yes.
re-programming makes sense, but I'd watch this one carefully.

SOLVED!!!!

William, you got it right! Thanks for the suggestion to reprogram, it worked.

When I put it on CC Link all the settings had changed I guess to the defaults, I know the direction reversed from were I had it set, also was not in CL mode and not on Set RPM. I reset back to the settings I had been flying and turned on the system, it spun up as it should, hit full rpm and held. I checked the no load amps and it was now were it was originally 2.2 amps.

Thinking back, I think I understand what happened. When I went to do the quick turn around flight I flipped the shut off switch off then right back on, nothing happened so I shut it off waited a minute or so then powered on again. I seem to remember that the ESC could be programed without the CC Link and think that the very quick "off back on" put it into program mode and reset to the factory defaults. With the timer set at 100% throttle it drove the motor to some full power point which triggered the high amp shut down.

Lesson learned - is always let the system stay off at least 30 sec before powering back up to avoid problems. I guess it also says make sure all your connections are clean and screw connections tight so that you don't get any electrical noise or glitches that could cause a reset.

Best,              DennisT

I do not think this applied to the Phoenix, however, I was looking at the history of Castles firmware revisions and they DID release a "fix" for the ICE controllers that addressed a problem with them losing their programming.
