I will let Mike Griffin document the building of his test build RSM P-40. I too am doing a test build on the same plane. Over the course of these test builds, and we have done several, we share information regarding issues we find. Anyway here is a picture of my plane, hopefully it will be in the air soon.

Kin I fly it? Huh, huh huh? It is a bit big for my tastes, but one must occasionally rise above one's principles.

I was granted an opportunity to fly RayFirkins' electrified PrimaryForce. That is a "Fab" combination! He has that baby TUNED! It turns out that it is a refit and refinish of a plane he got used, but it sure looks like a quality scratch build. And in my school colors, too. Wonder if he would sell......

Hi Andy

Just now getting to this page. Great job on the P40. I have had a few interruptions in my building but the wing is coming along nicely. I really enjoy working with you on these test builds as it really improves our building skills and and makes us think about things that I normally might overlook. This should really be a sweet flying model and Eric should do really well with the kit when he releases it...

I guess this is one of the reasons I haven't gone to a electric plane yet. Each week or month a new design. But, this one may do the trick as I really like the P-40 in the Flying Tigers paint scheme. For a first timer in electric I see planes and motor combinations with a battery. What I would like to see is a complete package, plane, motor, ESC/timer, battery and charger that are matched. Actually it might be nice to have two batteries. Andy, the plane looks great in bare bones.

Hi Doc

Eric is already doing this. He will match the plane to an electric system, program it for you and send it out along with the kit. All you have to do is intall it on the plane when you finish building it and go fly.

The P40 B & C are the best looking pursuit ships of the early war models. The John Wayne movie "Flying Tigers" has the best flying and ground sequences of them.

I have to say that the model looks really good!

It is a real pleasure working with Andy and Mike. These two fellows are excellent builders but what is even more important is the fact that they both let me know anything that does not work properly. Sometimes we think in our mind that an idea or a new method will work well. Then when we translate that thought into the plan for a model we find that what worked in our minds does not work in real life. Both Andy and Mike are the kind of people who will try something new and then let me know if it works in real life. They are also the kind of guys who are happy to let me know if I missed something or am making a simple process really more difficult than it has to be. That is very important especially in the test build process!

I am very fortunate to know Andy and Mike!

Hey forget the landing gear and fly off grass. I can still remember my Dad launching my planes in the hayfield and pasture.

How you doing Doc, been a while since I last saw you. You are right about the landing gear, when I was young we never put gear on planes just hand launch over grass. Man that was a long time ago! I am planning to go to VSC next year any change you will be there?

Hi Andy;

OK, here's the deal...... Since you are going to be flying the model tomorrow (Sunday) I will bend you a new set of gear for you on Monday.

This of course assumes that the model comes back in one piece. I am not worried about you doing any damage to the P40 but we all know what can happen when Larry Renger picks up the handle. I also understand that Stan Tyler has threatened to test fly it as well. With the cast of characters that have expressed an interest in flying the P40 I am sure that you can understand my caution.

Besides....the gear are the correct length. I just bent the axles in the wrong direction (although now that I think about it only the Curtis company would have the wheels facing the wing tips when everybody knows that wheels should face inboard).

I heard from you that the new P40 flew successfully on Sunday and has survived the experience. Your new landing gear with the axles turned to the correct direction are on their way to you.

Thanks Eric for making the correction in the motor mount area. When the parts I need arrive, I will finish up the fuselage, assemble the plane, cover it, finish it and go fly it. I think we have already established from Andy's test flight that it is a great flying electric.

An Anderson Spitfire up front, you know Jim that's an idea! The plane flew quite well for just starting out the trim process. I did turn outside tighter than inside, but this was easily corrected with handle biasing. I got a suggestion from Bob Whitely, via Eric Rule, to add some up elevator in small increments and see if that makes a difference. The CG with the battery in the location on the picture is very close to perfect, no lead anywhere. I don't even put tip weight in the electrics profiles anymore. The battery weight is all that is needed, in fact on the Naughty Girl I had to remove the tip weight to get it to fly level.

I have installed the correct landing gear struts since the picture was taken, the axels now point in the right direction. I had to send Eric a picture of a real P-40 to show him the axels did in fact point our. Finally for thoughts that are wondering, yes that is Monokote on the wing. I was in a hurry to wrap up this project for Eric and Monokote goes on quick. For sport models Monokote is not a bad idea, it is quick, light and easy to put on.
