new Bob hunt foam wing for my new electric model
came out at 11.5 ounces

so i Geo"d it to get rid of 2.5 ounces

the model is going to be a strega but with a Cardinal 92 wing
the centre has been fibre glassed
im going to plastic cover it as if dope gets into the foam .........
the last panel will be cut out when the tips are on
hopefully 52 ounces all up weight .....ha ha

and retracts

the bracing adds very little weight but gives lots of strength of the torsional forces

the strips are 1/4 square cut from very light sheet

Yes, that's a good idea, especially if you like your stab to stay level even after you put silkspan on the fuselage,... don't ask how I know that one!

I did a similar deal with a Dixon kept foam wing, I used SLC film just over the open bays and 1/2" beyond for adheasion so I could silkspan after like normal. I didn't SLC the whole wing so as to avoid any film type bubling over the sheeted areas. Once you silkspan, it stablizes the SLC and it doesn't shift.

model moving along nicely

as you can see i have rebated the front of the wing so i can get the batteries as far back as i can

even with a ten inch nose my last model was 30 grams on the tail needed
also the retracts and wires in place
on this model the battery tray is in line with horizontal CG
and when the retracts are up it should be prefect ,,,,,,,,last famous words
more photos to come ,,tail plane next
usualy build 1/2 inch thick stabs but this time trying 3/8 geo .

the way i get things light is very care full wood selection
also Bob Hunts Foam wings are very light to start with

i got all this wood from Prague many years ago

for ex-sample 1/16 x4 x 42 inches c grain 12grams but to get the light stuff i had to buy lots of medium
when i went last i bought 2500 sheets of various wood thicknesses

as Windy used to say "if your wood is 15 grams and not 10 your model is 70 ounces and not 55 "

How are you avoiding interference between the inboard retrack and the leadout lines. I too have a set of the same retracks and a special timer from KR that works great with them. I keep thinking the leadouts will conflict with the inboard retrack, maybe that is the problem I am over thinking this!

the bellcrank is mounted high in the wing
and the re tracks wire is pulled tight when connected so it sticks to the bottom of the wing

hi all more pics of my elec model

the top decking is moulded out of 1/16 very light balsa the location strips are put on the edges to locate with the fuz ,a 1/8 square down the spline to stiffen it and super glue sprayed on it
weight is 9 grams
next is the access panel so i can get to my retracts wires
esc and timer bay next
complete model without motor 17 ounces

next dilema is to tissue the whole model or cover in plastic

answers please your views

Hi Paul,

I would cover the open bays only with SLC, just onto the wood enough to seal it down. Then use silkspan over everything. You will get the puncture resistance of the SLC plus the added strength of silkspan. Total weight gain is negligible, since less dope is needed to fill the silkspan.

Hi Paul,

"SLC" is "Super Light Covering" offered by Phil Cartier. It is a clear mylar (?) covering which irons on, heat shrinks and is paintable. Several people are using it under silkspan or silk. It greatly increases the puncture resistance while doping on the silkspan gives it better torsional (?) strength. Plus, it requires less dope to fill the silkspan.

foundout esc was faulty ,because ibought a ztw esc and coupled it to a will hubin fm9 timer and it seemed to work ,so my question is...are these esc,s with governers really nessarcery?

Uh - right thread? Did you tell us what the problems were?

Will Hubin has a bunch of different timers to choose from; most of them are designed to work with an ESC with a governor.

The Kieth Renicle (sp?) timer contains a governer and an algorithm to sense a prop strike and shut things down; it'll work with any old ESC (but if you use it with an ESC with a governor you want to turn the governor off, lest the two governor algorithms get into a fight).

i said "no never i like my four strokes "
but i eat my words ,
i have two electric planes now and going out to fly is a real pleasure ,and clean ,noise isn"t a problem where i fly

so here is the model finally with black decking and canopy on

spending lots of time trimming ,the pusher props ,here it is with a 13x4.5 thin pusher

model came out at all up weight 53 ounces

i must say a 53 ounce model flies a heck a lot better than a 72 ounce plane , thats what i have found ,and you all going to say of course ,that as there is no large saito up front the model turns very well

wing is a Bob Hunt Cardinal 92 foam panels ,lightened
fuz is Brodak strega design ,18 inch hinge to hinge with a 10 inch noise
motor is an OS 3825-750
battery ...hobby king 5s-3000
esc casltle lite 50
time Will Hubin fm9r
retracts ..e-flight 10-15
prop 13x4.5 thin ep
revs still playing but around 9800
battery usage is about 75%
finish tissue fuz and tailplane
brodak clear dope to apply finish
