I am thinking about dusting off a handle and finishing one of Trex 50 airplanes.  This was the 600 square inch version of the orginal Trex, and I think is far superior to original.  It is the same wing size as a T-bird 2....  16 1/2 tail moment, 10" nose....  Should weigh is the low 50s....

I am going to go electric if I decide to get back into this...  My Dad has a lot of electric RC stuff and I really like it.  I thought I could go with my Dad and we could have some bro time.  Since I have literally nothing IC left after selling all my stuff after my divorce some years back...   The only electric I flew in control line was pretty awesome...  and that was many years ago.  I bet it is much better now.

Anyway....  I thought about buying the RSM 46 Competition package.  I really like the KR timer.  So, there's that.  It seems about the right size.

Basically I want something that is between an LA 46 and mild ST 60.  Maybe throwing about a 12" prop or slightly smaller.

Just tell me what to get...  OR what your opinions are... 

PS:  Who has the good electric props?

It sounds like you're on the right track.

Look in the "list your setup" section here and find a plane that's a similar size and weight -- that'll tell you what motors & battery combos work.

When you're comparing brands of motors, the important things to compare are the rated power levels (both continuous and burst, or instantaneous), and the Kv.  The Kv says how fast the motor spins with a given voltage applied, the rated power says how much power the motor can consume in normal flight without bursting into flame.

There are subtleties, but in general electrics give you more leeway than IC engines.

Hi Bradley,
In the low 50's all up weight neighborhood, you're looking at either
a 4S setup with 3300 mAH batteries (or bigger) and a motor KV of ~ 900 with a motor weight of 6 ~ 7 ounces ...
OR
a 5S setup with 2500 mAH batteries (or bigger) and a motor KV of ~ 750 with a motor that weighs the same.

All I hear is good things when it comes to the KR timer, so go for it.

Eflight .32, Castle 50 amp ESC, 5S 2700 mah packs, and the APC 13 x 4.5 ( original thin blade and hub) will be a really solid package,,

eedited to add,
this will work exceptionally well in a 600 inch airframe,, but it will work up to the higher 670 range as well,, so its versitile

I am not sure which of the RSM 46 motors you are referring to but the two I have used run very well with the APC 12x6.5 WEP props I get from Dennis Adamisin.  I set the motors to 8200 RPM the gain to 4 and they work very well.  Depending on the weight of the plane the setup works with 4 cell batteries from 2600mha to 3300mha.  I have tested this setup with the Hacker A30-10 XL, and the KDA A30-10XL with very good results in both the Naughty Girl and as of yesterday the Hacker setup in the new P-40.

APC EP are being used by many electric control line fliers. Expert stunt pilots may use various other props that suit their needs.

  • Last and least, Hanger 9 makes a timer.  It's the timer that you take home at closing time when you've been drinking steadily since dinner and the other timers have all dumped you for better fliers
