Title: OK, here's a dumb question

So, I'm certainly no electrical expert. The leads that go to the timer from the ESC. Which one is the ground? the choices are red, yellow and brown. I assume that the brown is the ground and the red is the positive lead but I can't find the original instructions and I don't want to let the smoke out.

Oh, should have said: ESC is a Castle Creations and the timer is a Hubin FM-9

I assume you are asking how it plugs into the timer?

Looking at the timer from the top with the plug prongs toward you, your ESC plug should be on the right hand three prongs with the brown wire on the left (near the center of the six prongs).

Clear as mud??

Color codes vary.  Modern radios use the same pinout, but different shaped keying on the connectors (your Hubin timer isn't keyed).  Center is always +, and is almost always red.  Ground is either black or brown, depending on the brand.  Signal can be yellow, white, orange, or some other color, but I've never seen one in brown or red.

The nice thing about putting the + lead in the center is that if you connect things backwards you don't blow anything up.

If you plug the ESC up to the correct 3 pin on the timer but plug it in backwards it won't hurt anything.  It just won't work.  Turn the plug around and all is good.  If you plug it in the wrong place all bets are off.  The standard color code is brown or black is ground. Red is power. Orange, yellow or white is signal. Power is always the middle pin. Plug up backwards and you have swapped ground and signal.  Won't work but shouldn't hurt anything.  Some of the very old Airtronics servos have power and ground reversed. plug them into a modern receiver and they will smoke. Not our problem because electric control-line doesn't use a lot of servos.  And it's not likely you would have an old style Airtronics servo.

FWIW: I have lots of old Airtronics, Kraft and Futaba radio stuff (equipment) And its fairly simple to switch the wires so they are all compatible.

Look funny as "L seeing a Kraft serve working with an Airtronics radio!
