Novice at electric set up
« on: February 27, 2011, 11:42:08 AM »
 ???

Here is my projected setup for my Navion.  The Navion is about the same size as a Sterling P-51 profile and looks very similar.  Please let me know if these choices will work.

MOTOR: Hobby Lobby 300 size brushless outrunner, 1400 KV, 28mm dia. x 26mm long

Prop: 8 x 6 pusher (I want to take advantage of the motor torque to keep it out on the lines)

CONTROLLER: Atlas Black 12 amp brushless controller

BATTERY: 3-cell, 11.1V, 3300mAh, 30c Li-Po

Timer: Will Hubin (when I hear back from him)

CHARGER:  ???  What type of balancing charger, what charge rate?

Let me know if this is okay for sport stunt, or do I have it screwed up.  Thanks.

Don,
That motor looks too small for the Navion. In fact I use a 300 size for my 1/2A models.  It is about a 75w motor, not enough  power. You need something bigger. Stunting requires something like 150-200watts/pound. Check the list your setup thread for some good examples
This motor looks better to me. http://www.hobbypartz.com/monsterpower-32--770kv--outrunner-brushless-motor.html

I use the following charger and balance adapter, very good if you don’t use batteries with more than three cells.
Hobbico 12V DC Quick Field Charger MkII  http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCTZ5&P=ML

Great Planes ElectriFly Equinox LiPo Balancer  http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGS7&P=ML

By the way I always liked that plane, so much I shipped it overseas and back back in the 60's

Yup.  Way not enough motor power, but probably more battery than you need.  You need a bigger motor and controller.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

:)  Thanks!  That is what I wanted to know.  According to Hobby Lobby, that motor is supposed to work, but I was not sure.

Don,

Below is my setup for Sterling S-1 Ringmasters which I believe should work for you. I suggest that you spring for a quality ESC of sufficient size to handle overloads but other components may be of more modest levels. Shop around for the best prices and do not fear Chinese sources (Hobby King) for batteries etc. I use a CellPro charger and have had no problems. I suggest that using a 1C charge rate will keep you in a safe range without stressing your battery (perhaps will take longer to charge). John Hammonds from the UK also has a S-1 Ringmaster setup listed in the "List Your Setup" sticky thread at the top of this forum page.

I have 2 Ringmaster S-1s
One is an RSM Old Time Legal S-1 kit build. 32 oz
One is scratch built (using RSM S-1 Old Time Legal plans as a guide). 28.5 oz

42" span
383 Sq area

Scratch built has a Turnigy 3245 1000KV (This maybe a little overkill!)
(I have a Scorpion SII 3008 1090KV that I plan to try - will reduce weight too! I will report on this one this Spring)
Castle Creations Phoenix 45 ESC (Using Control Line set RPM Governor mode.)
Rhino 4S 1750 20C or Zippy Flightmax 4S 2200 20C Battery
Will Hubin timer FM-2X (custom for CC ESC using Control Line Governor mode set RPM)
(Will now has this timer called FM-2SR at $15)
APC 12-6 electric pusher cut down to 11"
60' lines (eye to eye).

RSM Old Time Legal kit built is the same as above except:
Scorpion 3014-22 motor 892 KV
(Scorpion has now replaced this motor with the "new" Scorpion SII-3014-830KV)
