Question About Connections
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:18:54 PM »
I'm in the process of assembling an electric system, soldering on connectors and all that.  I'm using a Keith Renecle timer which requires a connection to one of the ESC output wires.  In addition, I plan on getting an Eagle Tree data logger in the future and its brushless motor speed sensor requires connections to two leads.  Rather than soldering these to the ESC output leads, could I install short wire leads to the ESC connectors, put small bullet connector sockets on each of them, put male bullet connectors on the timer and sensor leads then just plug everything together as required?  Or does the two additional solder joints per lead plus the bullet connectors make corruption of the signals going down these wires just too easy and probable?

Thanks for putting up with my questions.

Using the 2 "adapters" will work if you use them on a temporary basis.  The less connections the better.  I've used this method when hooking up my Eagle Tree data logger.  BTW, I've always used just 1 wire hooked up to the motor lead for RPM when using ET.

Good solder joints and gold plated connector will work fine.  Just make sure everything is short as possible and use shrink tubing to avoid shorts.  I use bullet connectors for the 3 wire motor connection.  If they will handle this they will surly handle the KR timer signal.  As I say make sure every thing is tight.  Also if you are cable tying up the wires don't bundle the KR timing wire in with the motor wires.  There has been reports of cross talk between the motor wires and the KR wire if bundles together.

PS if you are new to making solder connections get help (training) from someone who can solder.

Since I do this all the time I am including a picture of how I connect my KR timers to the motors.  I have found these small gold plated connectors work great and it allows me to move motors and ESCs from one plane to the next.  Hope this helps.

2 mm connectors from HK should work.

Shrink tubing is also available at HK.

I always add this small stuff to an existing order to save shipping. I also buy a mix of shrink tub every time I order from HK.  I have a drawer full of shrink.    y1

Andrew, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing.  Thanks for your corroboration of my gut feel.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this.

I have not had any issues with cross-talk and I think that Andy found out that the interference was coming from the particular esc. I regularly shove all the wires together when I'm testing the timers, and often hold the wires together with my fingers before I solder them. Having said all that....it is always a good idea to keep the plumbing neat and tidy, even if it's just for ease of working on the system when necessary.
