Walter Umland Battery & Motor mount System E-Banshee
« on: October 15, 2011, 11:01:22 AM »
I started the fuselage on the E Banshee with Walter's system. First he supplied me with a lite-ply template for the battery, motor frame. I lined it up on the fuse marked it out and cut away the excess. The rest is pretty much explained in the pictures. He did supply a laser cut 90 degree triangle to make sure all was straight. Everything fit great, now to glue it in and assemble the motor mount system. After the front motor mount is in place 5/8" will be removed from the nose. Kinda got some pics out of order oops

Since the original design was for a Fox .35 is the firewall (motor mount) moved aft any for W&B?
This seems to be the norm for modern glow engines on a Banshee.

If you do a little bit every day it will get done, or you can do it tomorrow.

That is a good looking mount.  If you put the ventilated ply plate on the OUTBOARD side you can install the pack from the other side & centrifugal force in flight will help hold the pack in the battery pocket.

I think you should be OK with the stock nose - shortening is important when a 35/40 with muffler is used because they are heavier than the Fox 35.  Your motor is probably much litghter than the Fox, the battery heavier than the fuel tank with fuel.  In total you should come out pretty good.

Side note to Walter if he's watching NICE JOB with the mount!

My personal bias is to try to make the inside of the plane look as good as possible, because that's the part that I have to look at when I'm flying it.  So I generally try to put all the ugly stuff (motor, tank, linkage, etc.) on the outside.  It may not be best by any other measure, but it does keep the inside uncluttered.

On the other hand, we had a contestant (I can't remember the name) have a battery come adrift during a flight at the Fall Follies -- had he put it outboard that may not have happened.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thanks for the kind words guys but all I am really doing is listening to what you're saying and using
our laser and the minor cad abilities I now have which was learned from the cad guys I have been
working with for the past few years.

So the real kudos goes to all you guys that been leading the pack.

 H^^
Thank you and God Bless

Got a new computer and am trying to post a picture so this is a test. Well it worked not as simple as before, my new HP Touchsmart won't take my older Photosmart software ?? Think it's a Windows thing.

I have the battery and motor frame work installed and the ply doublers. First step now is to epoxy the Rear Bearing Wall to the front of the battery frame. Now Walter re engineered the rest of the rear bearing mount assy, instead of the one piece items they have been laser cut into two pieces each so the motor can be easily removed. Here's some pics of the new pieces.

I've got the motor temporarily mounted, the only problem so far is mounting the motor with the X mount to the front mount is you can't overly tighten or you will distort the mount. I will have to use the non permenent type of thread locker. Any suggestions on the way I attached are welcome. The rear mount has yet to be drilled out for blind nuts.

My intent today was to use one of the 1/8" pieces of basswood to replace the 1/16" ply nose ring in hopes of eliminating the distortion when I tighten the mounting bolts. It didn't work :( well I have an 1/8" piece of ply that was replaced by a newer 2pc item, soooo I'll go back to the scroll saw and do this all over again. Here's some more pics. I figured out my new HP Photosmart camera download so my pics are under 100 kb which helps get more pics per post. I also need to get the back plate closer to the nose where it will be cut off. I can't get the prop shaft any further back than it is.

do yourself a huge favour and scrap the plywood for mounting your motor to - it WILL distort and you can and probably will get the motor to start digging in to the ply

use some fibreglass board - G10 or similar to mount your motor too- it is hard, flat and will not distort......you can (seeing as you have the ply installed already) laminate some 1/6th G10 to either side of the mount to eliminate crushing too..

Wynn, thanks for the tip. The ply isn't what is distorting it's the balsa inbetween from me tightening it up to much. Gunna try the front mount with just basswood and ply and see how that does. The X mount distributes the mounting pressure but the blind nuts are individual and need to be tightened each the same.

I believe the problem is fixed, I had enough pieces left from the reengineering to have all ply and basswood front mounting pieces. I tightened it all up and all is well. Was able to get the prop shaft back on the motor shaft more so a little shaping and it should look dandy. I got lucky and had the proper adapter to charge one of the Gadex 4s Lipo's and even with them being several years old they charged up just fine at 16.82 V at 99% charge, now to make up a test stand.
