Best source for AXi repairs?
« on: January 16, 2011, 08:59:59 PM »
My AXi 2826-10 threw a magnet today. Luckily it happened on the takeoff roll and did not cause any damage to the model. This is a near-new motor with about 20 flights on it, so this is disconcerting. I don't think it is prudent to take it apart and try to re-epoxy the magnet; rather have it repaired or replaced by a shop. I want it checked out and blessed by someone who knows what he is doing. So, where is the best place or best way to get repairs done? Not sure where the motor was purchased, as I got it NIB from a fellow modeler.

Thanks, Igor. Very interesting site. AXi makes a lot of stuff I had never heard of. I think I need to locate a US-based repair shop to check out the motor and see if any damage occurred. Looking at the motor today I see that at least one, maybe two, magnets came loose from the motor shell.  I am sure I could open the motor and glue them again but I would not be 100% sure of its future reliability.

Mike:
20 flights?  seems very odd indeed.  Do you have any reason to believe the motor is running hot or in some way contributing to the loose magnet?  Any evidence of motor flex & magnet strike?

What size prop?

Igor: thanks for the link.  I thiought youmentioned that you were using a special wind of the 2826?

Hi Dennis:

Yes, about 20 flights, not all of them full length pattern flights either. We checked motor, ESC and battery with an IR temp reader a number of times when doing initial testing to make sure the cooling air was getting where it needed to be; no indication of unusual temps. I am using the APS 12-6P and experimenting with the 13-4.5. Most flights have been with the 12-6 at around 9000 rpm (read on a good tach). I am really stumped about this. I learned the motor came from Tower Hobbies about a year ago. My benefactor is sending another of his collection of 2826-10s so I will be back in the air soon, but still need to fix the problem one.

I had the same problem on my first AXI 2826/10.  I never found a US source to fix it, so I pulled it apart and fixed it.  Still in use today.
Bob Hunt told me to get my AXI motors from Hobby Lobby in Tennenssee,
as they will warranty what they sell.  Bought my last one from there.

Hi Mike,

Like others have mentioned, this is strange. I have over 300 flights on one of my AXI motors.

Have you contacted the distributer that sold it to you? They should replace it for you. Like Bob, I tell everyone to buy from HL in TN. They have been very good about replacing items like yours that failed prematurely. I have used them since 1982 (before you were born? ;-) and they have been excellent with their customer service. Please keep us posted with your results.

Hi Rudy:

I tried to get the motor from HL International but they are like permanently out of stock. That was why I asked recently if they were still being imported. A flying buddy who had obtained several 2826-10s from Tower Hobbies a year ago took pity and provided me with one. Tower seems not to handle them any longer, as far as I can tell. Normally I would just send it to Tower, but if they have no replacements that won't help much.

My concern about repairing this one is that if I overcooked it somehow and weakened the epoxy, it may shed another magnet at a later, more catastrophic, moment like at the top of the clover.

I may have to give Scorpion or Hacker a try, as they seem readily available and have a good reputation. I have a replacement from my overgenerous buddy so can still fly, but want to have a backup motor at least.

And I was born in 1947, about the time electricity was invented.

Yes, Dennis, I use 2826/13 ... it works better with 6s LiFe and 12x6 APC. The wire is the same, just one turn more (compared to 2826/12), so it makes better copper filling and better efficiency, and it is necessary for that small capacity.

Hi Mike,

HL will have the AXI motors in stock in early Feb., you can place your Order now if you want to wait a few weeks. The Hackers are very good. At the AMA EXPO a few weeks ago 90% of the indoor RC flyer's were using Hackers, I have used them in ERC for many years. I like the ECL size Hackers for many reasons, one of them is that they come stock with a lightweight FAN already installed. ...... I have not used the Scorpion, but I have heard good things about them and they look like they have addressed the cooling issue too.

There is a thread somewhere here where someone found that there was no repair station for any of our E motors. At their relatively low price I can understand why no one would try it as a business model. It is much easier for distributors to just replace one for us. Using a good, heat resistant epoxy should work for the home repair, others have done this. I'm just too lazy to try the repair.  n~

FWIW, I had my AXI blow a magnet or three as well. It was only a few flights old at the time but I had owned it for quite a while. HL replaced the motor for half the price of a new motor no questions asked. It may be worth looking into as thats probably cheaper than having it repaired ( unless you can get warranty repair) It may even qualify for a full on warranty replacement.
I was told by a friend from "the dark side' that the AXI motors used to be the bottom feeder motor,, and that they had a lot of problems with magnets coming loose, but we were both under the impression that this had been resolved, perhaps not

As for Hackers,
I have used the A30-10XL with good effect in place of the AXI 2826
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!
