AXI 2820/08 1500kv
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:33:29 PM »
I've got an AXI 2820/08 (1500kv), I originally bought it for my flightstreak several years ago and it was a really good match for the 3s A123 packs I was using at the time. It only lasted about 4 minutes but boy did it party.

Any thoughts on a good starting point up for a lipo set up for this motor? It seems too good a motor to leave lying in the draw. I have been playing around with it in my Gotchastreak using one of the original APC 11*5 pushers which was found to be nearer 11*3.5 and running it at around 11,800rpm. It pulls like a train but it's a really thirsty beast taking 80% out of a 4ah 3s lipo in 4:30. By comparison my old Scorpion 3014/16 (1187kv) runs through the pattern in 5:25 and only uses approx 70% (In the same model). I've tried running it slower with more pitch but the governor seems a bit vague under those circumstances.

As I said I would like to use this motor and short of buying some more A123 pack does anyone have any thoughts on what might be a good way of improving efficiency? Should I drop to 2 cells and try running it in the 8,500 area or stick with 3 cells and possibly up the pitch but reduce the diameter? Or should I just put it back in the draw.

Thanks in advance

thats a wicked high KV motor - I would go for less diameter with larger pitch....

you could get away with a 2S pack as well - max revs = 7.4*1500 = 11,100  - on the streak I'd use 10 x 4 or 9 x 6  -they fly well with that range of prop.

Thanks Wynn,
I think I had almost answered my own question, it's amazing how writing things down puts things into perspective.

I'll definitely try a smaller prop with a bit more pitch as a starting point (Cheaper than buying a 2s Lipo). I bought the motor during my learning phase (Hence the decision to use A123's due to them being a lot more robust than Lipos).

I've also been looking for a short nose stunter which I could ballast with say a 3s2p A123 set up The thing which puts me off this approach though is the price of Life cells seems to have steadily increased over the last few years where as the price of good quality Lipos has gone in the other direction.

I think it's destined to go back in the Flightstreak with a 3s Lipo and a smaller prop with more pitch as you suggest.

Thanks for the advice.

John:
For the Flite Streak I would suggest the 9x4.5 prop and 3S x 2500 (min) to 3Sx3300 (max).  I think you will want 11,500 - 11,800 RPM.  The smaller dia prop will cut your power usage.

My nephew ran the original Brodak red motor (also kv=1500) in a Brodak Oriental using a 10x5 APC at 10.800 RPM.  This was below the recommended gov range but works very well in Set RPM mode

Thanks, I think it will definitely to go back in the Flightstreak, I'll get myself a couple of 9x4.5 APC's and give it a whirl.

Thanks again both.
