How about Hacker
« on: October 18, 2011, 03:21:54 AM »
I fly a lot of electric R/C and one of my favorite brands of motors is Hacker.  Just curious as to why they don't seem to be utilized much for electric C/L?   Must be a reason, just wondered what it was.

I'm guessing personal preference and maybe ease of purchasing. Who sells them ??

Eric Rule at RSM has been selling them for some time, along with the Hacker ESC, which does offer a governor mode. They are considered to be a well-made motor, along with the Plettenberg. Perhaps some users will chime in with their experiences. (I've only put them on the test stand).

Guys,
I have been running their 30XL10 for a couple weeks in my profile ship. I replaced an AXI 2826/10 and added the rear external bearing (I couldn't get the rear mount shaft for the AXI to add the bearing everyone is out of stock). To date the motor is a strong runner, comes with all the hardware you need for both front and rear mount, uses a standard 1/4" shaft so there is no need to ream out props. One area that gets a little confusing is the setting in the CC Phoenix 45 - CC told me to use the "outrunner" pulse with and "0" timing and that for the Hackers that is actually a timing advance. This caused surging and I went to 8 pulse width and 2 on the timing and things calmed down. The reason is something to do with the induction design according to CC that is opposite to say the AXI. Maybe some of the electrical tech guys can explain this to us.

Best,             DennisT

I've been using the A30-10XL for about 1 1/2 years now.  Zero problems.  I much prefer this motor over the
AXI 2826/10 the Hacker replaced.  Aero-Model is where I get mine.  They're in the Phoenix area and I think
are the importer.  They also handle issues with the motors - something I had a problem with with the
Axi. (Although no issues yet) Cost is about $80.

I have two planes flying with Hacker motors.  They are excellent quality and they make lots of power.  Yes, they cost more but I believe they have very good dollar value.

Well, this is great news.  I've had nothing but good luck with Hacker and with my style of 3D flying, believe me, they take a beating.  I think I'll look into this a little further.  As for suppliers, there are several.  Just Google "Hacker Motors" and you'll find them.  Honestly, I think they're comparatively priced with most of the motors out there with the exception of the Hobby King stuff, and I haven't had much luck with their motors so I usually avoid them.

Here is another source for Hacker motors, and good source for batteries too.  www.espritmodel.com

I have found Hacker motors to be excellent.

The other thing to remember is that the A40 series have that 3rd circumferential bell-edge bearing. That's excellent if you are building a ship that will carry a motor with the weight of an A40.

Shame they don't build an A30-with a 3rd bearing.

I have two of the A30-10XL motors, I got them from Eric Rule at RSM.  His Hacker motors are slightly different from other Hackers.  Eric contracted with Hacker for an extended prop shaft that extends out of both ends of the motor.  This allows for adding external bearing support to either the front or the rear of the motor.  I put a third bearing on the back side of the firewall and run the rear projecting part of the prop shaft through the firewall and into this bearing.   This way I get the advantage of three bearing support and easy firewall mounting.  I have this setup on three planes and so far so good.
