Title: New Brodak Turn-Key Systems
Post by: Dennis Adamisin on November 13, 2009, 04:41:51 PM
As I have hinted, I have been working on a series of "turn key" electric power pacakges 5 of the 8 planned systems have been completed and should be available for sale by the end of November.  THe packages feature Arrowind motors and batteries and Will Hubin TImers.  Sport systems use Arrowind non-governing ESC's matched with throttle up (battery compensating) timers.  PRO systems use Castle ICE-50 Lite ESC's.

BTW the motors use a comutator dimensions like AXI & Scorpion, use that as a guide in comparing Arrowind motors to what you may be using.

The packages that have been completed and which material is now arriving  include:

BRODAK    ARROWIND    ARROWIND    ARROWIND OR     HUBIN     APC
SYSTEM     MOTOR       BATTERY       CASTLE ESC      TIMER     PROP     COMMENTS

                                                                                          13x4
25.2 oz      8.8 oz           15.0 oz            0.8 oz          0.6 oz

Brodak will also be handling a VERY small simple charger for the 05 system, a good basic charger for 2S-4S systems (max 2A rate) and a premium charger for 2S - 6S systems (max 5A rate).

Back to the power systems; testing has been completed and orders are pending for a 25-35 system using a 4Sx2800 lipo and a .05 to .10 system shown in the "List Your Set-up" thread for the 1/2A Pathfinder.  Anticipate availability by late January 2010.

The 15-19 package is still under development - seeking that balance of performance (got it) versus weight (got too much of it!)

For more info on the Arrowind material visit:  http://arrowindhobby.com/

Stay tuned for pricing - the Boss is finishing that up now, keep an eye on the Brodak website.

So this is how I spent my summer - whatcha think???

Thanks for the work Dennis!!!  This would help me into an electric setup if I want to try it on my Stunthangar P-40.  Hopefully Mr. Brodak will have it cheap enough for somebody who lives on an allowance (me  ;D ) and parents to afford it. H^^

Dennis,

Great job, not to be a pain but could you list the weights of the components.

Thanks,            DennisT

Great work Dennis!!!!!
I flew the big system an can say without a doubt that it works in large planes. I saw the small system work in the small Pathfinder and can say that it pulls that plane with authority on 50' of lines. The larger Pathfinder also had way more than enough!!!!

Looks like a big jump in weights from EPS-40 to an EPS-50!

UPDATES:

* The new Brodak electrics stuff is starting to show up on the website.
* Brodak is now offerng the Super Clown pacakge power system, charger AND THE AIRPLANE for $260 - that is over $100 less than its predecessor.  The new system uses the components described in the first post of this thread, so it allows you to set the throttle and flight time a little easier.

* Brodak is now offering a Baby Clown ARF package complete with lines and handle for $150  That is also a pretty awesome deal.

* one nice new ofering is the Digital Battery Monitor (#BH-1874) that plugs into the balance connector and gives the voltage readout cell by cell then for the total pack.  I use mine as a cross-check to make sure I switched to a CHARGED battery.  Fits the normal balance connector for most packs(JST?) does NOT fit a ThunderPower balance plug.

* I understand that Castle back-ordered the ICE-50 ESC's, so all the PRO power systems are waiting for these.

That is good news! I have been back and forth the last month and may give this package a try. I picked what I was going to use but some stuff simply was not in stock at the other Hobby sites. At the Brodak site I typed in EPS50 but no such product exists as yet. So, I called and spoke to a gal and of course she had never heard of the product either.....so I will wait....I have wings to skin anyway.

As of TODAY the power package is not listed.  Castle has back-ordered the ICE-50 Lite ESC's and Brodak  did not want to list the package until it is available.  HOWEVER, you can buy the Motor (2832/05 #BH-1840) Battery (4Sx3300 #BH-1848), Will Hubin Timer (#BH-1870) that will be used in the EPS-50 system.

BTW, if you go to the Brodak site and under "Online Catalog" along the left column, click on "Electric" and you can see what they DO have available - the list is starting to fill-out.

Absolutely..... checked it all out....just wanted to see if there was "soon to be released" package deal advertisement. I saw that the charger had a blurb about the EPS-65 system so I figured, if I snoop a bit further...but no dice. LOL To much time on my hands.

What do you recommend for line length for the 1/2 A system?

Hi Jim
I'm flying the Baby Clown on 35' lines - and they are a little snug for manuvering.  The complete Baby Clown system is being sold with .008 x 42' - like Goldilocks said, that should be just right...

What airplane you have in mind?

I'm working on a "secret project" using the Baby Clown main wing panel. I am considering a power system like the Brodak one but prefer/need the 42' lines. My BC requires 42' lines to have comfortable room for stunts.

If I ever get the wing built I wil post it on the 1/2 A board.

Dennis,

Looking at the pictures of the motors it looks like they are set up for a rear mount. Is there an option to use a front mount on them?

Best,        DennisT

Yes they are all designed for rear mount, however they can be converted by loosening the grub screws & pushing the shafts out the other end.

Dennis,

Are Brodak planning or testing a EPS-15 package?  I seem to remember reading about a prototype somewhere??? or was that EPS-10?

I'm thinking a Flight Streak Junior, Peacemaker or even, dare I say it,  Acromaster!   (I remember seeing the question, what size engine for the Acromaster over and over on SSW, I wonder why nobody has asked about electric! LOL)

Regards,
Warren

Hi Warren

Yes I have been working on a 15 sized system but its been giving me fits until recently.  The problem was getting the right combination for adequate power and light enough.  Turns out the system I intended to be a "10" size runs great on a 7x5 pusher prop - about the same as you would use on a good 15.  Its an Arrowind 2210 - 1560 kv, uses 1000 mah to fly a 1/2A size Pathfinder thourgh a pattern - with AUTHORITY - on .008 x 50' lines.    The 1/2A Pathfinder is the same size as the Junior Flite Streak, Sig Acrobat or the old Magician 15, and it is bigger than the Flying Clown or Circus Prince.

I was flying with 3Sx1600 packs but was only using 1000mah so I have some 3sx1300's on order to score a little weight save.  I also used an Arrowind 18A ESC and the Hubin FM-0c timer - the same one as on the Super Clown.  However the 1/2A pathfinder flies so well and the power works so well that I think I want to try upgrading it to a Phoenix ESC in Set RPM mode - just like a REAL stunter!

I love flying my little 1/2A Pathfinder.  But it has one of those screaming Norvel 061s on it... I feel another conversion coming on....

I'm writing an article on ECL for our local Control Line newsletter.  I am mentioning the Brodak EPS systems as a good place to start.  I just know I am going to get people asking about a 15 size setup for sport and slow combat.

Thanks mate.

Hey Dennis is the Baby Clown set up adjustable for less out put to slow it down for training purposes? Thanks T.J.

It is non-adjustable with 100% throttle and 3 minute flight time.

HOWEVER, you can change to the Super Clown timer (#BH-1869) and adhust both flight time (1:45 to 6 minutes) and RPM adjustment.  BOTH would come in handy on a trainer.  Tell the Brodak folks that you want to change-out the timer - I think they would do that for you...
