REVISED APC ELECTRIC PROPS
« on: October 21, 2010, 02:58:47 PM »
Some of this is reported in the 11x5.5 Pusher thread, but I thought it could stand its own thread - it nees the visibility.

I have been working with APC on the new electric props, and have learned that APC is also redesigning all of their existing thin electric props.  In general they are taking the electric props and thickening up the hub roughly .070" - .12", then blending that added thickness into the blades.  The new props are stiffer and (according to APC & others) the stiffer props use less power.

There is no physical marking to distinguish the new versus the prior design props.  If you have examples in hand you can easilly see the differences, the new props are thicker, most noticably at the hub.

We can also expect that there will be some difference in performance with the new props.  Thus if you set up with the old, then change to the new, your settings will probably have to change too

* If you order props direct from APC you should be getting the updated design, however the older product is still out there.
* If you REALLY do not want to change you might want to start buying all of the old you can find...

Gday Dennis

I just went to the APC site looking for 13x6.5 EP and 13x4.5 EP props. But they want to charge me $44US for shipping!!!

Any ideas on where I can get these and get a better shipping price?

Thanks

Try this site from the UK  http://www.electricwingman.com
I bought three, 13x 4.5 EP APC's from them, postage cost was OK.

Tried the 11x5.5 pusher on the Twister and found overall that the 11 x 5.5 tractor
was better, with the pusher I had to run at least 500rpm more and had less line tension,
seems the tractor suits this model better. Had a chance to watch the Twister fly from outside of
the circle, my mate and passed Nats Advanced Champion was on the handle, he left for his home
at the end of the day with my spare electric setup he was that impressed with the idea of electrics.

Hi Paul
Your results are pretty much as expected, our tests indicated a roughly 400 RPM difference.  If you compare the pusher versus the tractor, you should see that the pusher is quite a bit thicker at the hub and out to about mid-span on the blade.  APC changed their designs to stiffen them up.  It also seems they have change the way the pitch progresses - netting a "flatter" pitch than before

If you were to buy an 11x5.5 tractor direct from the factory today it would match (mirror image) the pusher design, thus it would ALSO have the thick hub design and need to run 400-500 RPM faster than the 11x5.5 from 6 months or so ago.

Confusing!

APC & others claim the stiffer props use less power - but the RPM we need is higher, I'd say keep an eye on it to make sure you are still safe on battery usage.  Once you set up on the pusher and set your RPM accordingly, you should still see the advantages of the LH rotation with regard to better line tension espcially above the 45 degree elevation...
