Need some help with my motor run.

Went flying this morning and had four great engine runs. E flight 32 ,3200 6cell, jeti controller and accelerometer. Ryan and I went out this evening and I got up to the clover and the motor gave some warning and quit. Changed the Battery and this time it quit at the start of the inside squares. Took it home and bench ran it and it quit one and half minutes later. The battery temp 120, motor 160 and the controller 140 I think the controller is going over the hill. An suggestions
The prop is an apc 13x.4.5 This setup has been in the plane since last year with no problems.    Bill Rutherford

Bill, sounds like a clogged pick-up in the tank, or maybe loose backplate bolts!

First of all you should be running the power 32 on a 5 cell not a six. Too high a voltage will cause your speed control to run hot as it has to throttle down too far. If you are using the same batteries as last year and they weren't stored properly or maybe they are just old maybe they are failing and hitting LVC. These are just general possibilities as I don't know enough about the Jeti controller or accelerometer to speculate further.

Bill, if you go to menue "measuring" you will see statusline on end of menue, it shows reason why motor stopped. YOu must look there immediatelly after stopping. Next switching on will clear all error codes. I think it will be overheating of ESC. Try to move it to air stream with red sticker exposed to fresh air stream. 

Also be carefull because ESC can start again when it cools down.

The reason can be too high KV of the motor, you need something under 700. 5 cell will not work well, because motor must be able accelerate and I think 5cell will be too little. Or try 5 cells and pitch 6 or so.

Thanks for the help guys. It turned out to be a bad e flite motor. Ryan told me the magnets seemed week when he turned it over by hand. Well , he turned out to be right. Now to try and get  the right motor from captain Berger.

The magnet seem weak on my new e-flite 32 as well comparing to the AXI 2826-12..  but I think that's normal.

Easiest way to check magnets is to measure KV of the motor. Weak magnets will give higher Kv value. Weak magnets can cause overheating because of improper match between KV and cell count and also lower efficiency etc.

How are you guys deciding that the magnets feel weak?  The cogging torque of a motor is a function of both the magnet strength and the construction of the motor; some motor brands have very distinct cogging, while others are quite light (presumably because someone went out of their way to make it happen).

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Also make sure you have the temperature cutoff set to 110c in the ESC.

As far as the magnet feeling weak. My brand new e flight 32 has a stronger feel as you turn it over. I know the magnet in magnetos gets weaker over time . Am I right to assume that motors will also weaken over time? I just don't know. Also I have been feeding 6 volts to these motors and I wonder have I made them weaker? I still have so much to learn and I have to thank you all for educating me.   Bill Rutherford
