Necessary to set "desired head speed" when using FM-9?
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:18:50 AM »
I am not sure if I need to set values for "desired head speed" 1, 2 and 3 when using the FM-9 timer and Hubin field programmer, or what values to set. ESC is PH-45, CC 3.27 software (newest version) and 3.23 firmware loaded into the esc. I set for "CL" under vehicle type, governor "high," gain 25, and all the proper settings for motor poles, KV, gearing (direct) and battery cells.

Just guessing, I have set 9000, 10,000 and 11,000 as the three values, but the real question is, do we need to set anything or be concerned about "head speed" when using CL settings?

I could just ask Will Hubin ("Doctor Decathalon") but felt this is a question of general interest that should go here. I have studied previous threads that discuss ESC setting and CC software/firmware but don't see a clear answer to this. Thanks in advance.

you only need to set the head speed if you are using set RPM mode - the 3 values you put in relate to the 1, 2 3, RPM settings in the timer.  so you can select one of the 3 speeds you put into the ESC before you fly.

If you are using governor mode - you dont need to set the head speed.  (but I put values in there anyway)

Mike,
I am using the CC 45 ESC and a Ztron timer. For that setup I let the ESC control the rpm, the timer comes set to 100% throttle for the three set points. I only set the start delay time and the flight time on the timer. I then set all three flight mode rpms to the same the desired rpm in CL Governor fixed rpm mode the ESC.. This has worked well and makes set up simple, I believe it would work similar with the FM9 Timer.
