Title: My Wife and Son had their first Solo this weekend...
Post by: JohnPrator on February 28, 2011, 08:05:17 AM
Well my son had his first solo flight on his Ring Rat 250 this weekend and did great!

and then he got brave and went for a loop on his 2nd or 3rd flight of the day;

and then along came my wife; I tried to stand out there and help her last time and she said that I was "in her way, I can do it by myself" so, here is her first solo/s;(We made this video to tease her hence the repeated "mishap")  mw~   ;D

In all honesty I should've set her speed quite a bit lower than I did, next time I'll turn it down.

We had a blast and plan to head out again next weekend!!

Hey Darrell,

Thanks for the comment! He was excited about me posting the links on "your forum Dad" but honestly I thought I'd see a little more support for a child on here, but, after 25 views it appears half of em didn't even watch his short little videos.  ???  I'm not going to point him here, he'll be disappointed.  Anyway; He was mighty proud of his loop, and we laughed all weekend at and with Mom over her "Aircraft Mishap". Her RR is already back together and ready for another round. Thanks again Darrell!!

Well, I watched the vids and I got two words for ya - YEEEE HAWWWW!  Way to go coach  Looks like Mama-san (aka ACE) is really close to success and your son did great.  The 'rats did their job too.  All in all a great day!

What's next, an RR250?

Hi Dennis,
Thanks man, didn't mean to gripe but knew the kid was excited and well, you know how it is. Funny you said "YEEEE HAAWWW", I was going to put that on the underside of her wing!! The Ole "Ace" blew the front end right off of that baby didn't she! She said; "Wow, I didn't know I sounded like such a Red Neck" when she heard herself on video! She's a riot.

Oh, those are RR 250's, next Vector 40 baby!!! ;D

Great!  Your son is well on his way.  Look out NATs!  Your wife did the classic overcontrolling trick.  She needs to take it easy and let the Ringrat fly itself.  She will get there surely.  Relax and have fun!!!! y1 y1

John,

You be sure to tell your son and your wife that they did GREAT!  I am SO-O-O glad that they didn't have video cameras lo, these 50 years back.  I must have destroyed  8 to 10 Cox and Wen-Mac 1/2A's before actually learning to fly on an Ringmaster.  IIRC, none of the little ones lasted even a full lap.  I'm embarrassed just remembering.

Thank you for all the kind comments, he's pretty excited that he solo'd and pulled off a loop without wadding it up. I shouldn't have had a little pissy fit or I couldn've pointed him here and he could read the comments.... HB~>

Don,

Yeah, looked like she did over control but I also think I had it running quite a bit too fast. This weekend I'm going to put the 3-blade/2 cell back on and let it just float along for her and I think she'll be fine.

Jim,

If I had all the Cox and Testors planes I destroyed back in those days I could probably retire by selling them on ebay! I even had the little Cox electric(can't remember the name) that they released back in the 70's! Like you I'm VERY thankful no one video taped me "flying" back then, of course I'm not much better now either!  :-\   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THv0KovoWEs

Wynn,

I'm getting there with the Vector, figuring out how to properly mount the motor slowed me down a bit and I made a few mistakes that I had to rectify but I think I've got it figured out now. You were a very big help-thank you sir! I wish I would've taken some photos of her prior to covering, well fuse isn't covered yet so guess I could get a few of that. Hope you're doing well over there, family and friends all safe and accounted for now?

Hi John. Your son did great especially that first smooth landing.   Loved his first loop. Question? Where does one find this model?  Is it a kit, ARF, ARC, plans? D>K

Thank you Ty! The plane comes in a kit form from Stevens Aero(link below). Fun and quick building little kit, all laser cut, that flies like a dream. Here is a link to the plane; http://www.stevensaero.com/StevensAero-RingRat-CL-250-Nostalgic-Electric-Control-Line-Sport-SAK-RRAT250-p-20387.html (http://www.stevensaero.com/StevensAero-RingRat-CL-250-Nostalgic-Electric-Control-Line-Sport-SAK-RRAT250-p-20387.html) Post up if you get one!

John

Oh, forgot to say that all three of these RR's are on 52' lines!

Hi John, Great to see the videos. I picked up a Ring Rat 250 last weekend. What battery, charger are you using on it? What did you cover it with? Are the 52 feet lines .012" ?  Glad to see everyone having fun.   #^  Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

You'll love the RR, really fun plane to build and fly! Went out again this weekend my wife lawn darted her's again on the first lap. I was a little frustrated and she picked up on it. Took mine out and on the first flight she met with the ground in a bad way(I think it was karma for me getting a little frustrated with my wife). I was just doing a couple of outside loops to unwind the lines and on the second one it just went straight into the ground.   H^^ I had the battery in the wing and it came right thru the leading edge and destroyed the wing. I'm going to order another one this morning so I can get back in the air soon.

As for batteries I have a mixed bag but most are 2S 1100/1300 mah and 3S 1300 mah. The charger I'm using is a Bantam BCX 6 II. I covered one of them with Ultracote and the two others with Solar Film. You have to be careful when applying/shrinking the Solar Film as it will melt much easier than the Ultracote. I am using 52' lines of .012 multistrand wire, works great.

Oops, the charger is actually a BC6 DX II. Got it at Ron's; http://www.ronlund.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RHPS&Product_Code=BANBC6DXII&Category_Code=ELEC_BATC (http://www.ronlund.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RHPS&Product_Code=BANBC6DXII&Category_Code=ELEC_BATC)
