My Newest Project
« on: August 31, 2013, 04:42:56 PM »
Back in the 1990's I designed a profile P40 Warhawk. At the time I did not have a laser machine so I had to come up with something that I could build using a band saw and sand paper. The model became my P40 Profile. Although it flew very well I was never completely satisfied with the looks of the model.

Today I have the use of AutoCAD and a laser machine plus electric power. I have revisited the P40 profile and incorporated some new ideas into the construction. Things like laminated structures Stabilizer incidence and full span gapless hinges.

I intend to power this 624 sq. in. model with one of my KDA 36-10XL motors using the Kr Governor, ZTW 50 Amp ESC and a 4 cell 3300 mAh battery.

Here's what the new Electric P40 Profile will look like.

I too like P-40's, infact with the tiger  mouth has always been my favorite.   Will this be a package deal with the power package?  There are so many choices these days and this has really caught my eye. #^

Hi Doc:

The new P40 will be offered as a kit (with an I/C conversion included for those who still like "smokies"). We will also offer a complete, bench run and ready to mount ECL power system in either competition or sport level. The difference in the two power packages is the motor. The Competition motor is the Hacker A30-10XL while the sport motor is the KDA 36-10XL. Both of the power packages deliver around 700 watts so the performance with a 12" prop will be rather good.

Eric

Hi Jeff,

Eric has a "E-51" already.  It is the ".15" size P-51 that Ron Burn designed.

Hi Trax;

We have already designed an ECL conversion for my P51-D. It's simply a "drop in" to replace the  existing IC mount. Lots of room inside the fuselage for the electric power system and with the low wing saddle you can shove the battery way back to achieve a perfect C/G.

I made some changes to the way I handled the full span hinges in the flaps on the new P40 Profile Electric.

Here's the plan just about 100% completed. I expect to start cutting the test build kit sometime next week.

All comments & suggestion will be appreciated.

Hi Guil;

I don't have one right this moment but can certainly run one off for you. Since you are using those "G" motors just send me the measurements so that I can make the drop in box to fit your motor. Give me stuff like: length of motor from back of the stator to the front of the shaft (if you're mounting using a front mount). If a rear mount the let me know the width of the mounting plate. Also need to know the width of the motor.

Hi Eric:

I have an O-Plus almost completed (needs only trim colors) build around PA40UL on pipe. Would the E conversion you have in mind work with the as-built motor bearers etc?

Hi Mike:

In order to use the drop in motor box I have designed without any modifications you would have to remove the maple motor mount rails. If you wanted to cut down the box side to allow them to run under the maple rails I see no reason why it wouold not work for you in the O Plus.
