My new build 2014
« on: March 25, 2014, 09:42:06 PM »
Well, perhaps if I post pictures so that Wayne can badger me,, I will actually get something done on it,,
This is my new build for this year,, it is an Impact ( Paul Walker) with some slight style changes. All the relevant numbers are the same, basically changed the vertical, tips, canopy, and some tweak on the fuse shape,,
for those who may be faint of heart,, she has no clothes on yet :)
and is only held together with masking tape,,still a bunch to do before I joiin the wing permenantly,
with the new grandbaby coming, and a few minor things there, I have been stalled,,
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Mark,
I know you've been teased about the sharpness of you LE on some of you models, but I think you may have gone overboard.

Hey some item/things look great in the nude.  I like the look of your new plane and I know you will be using the old pen knife on the leading edge.   But, now did you ever finish the one that is under the bench or is hanging on the wall every body kept ragging you about? S?P

LOL,, actually there is still another leading edge strip to go on it,, I built it like Pat does,, 1/8 inch leading edge,, sheeting ,, then another 1/8 inch strip to capture the sheeting,, I threw it together because I ,, well, I just had to see what it was going to look like,, if you note, the wing is not centered in the fuse either,, ( something that Linda caught when I ased her what sshe thought,," well it would look better if the wingg was centered in the fuse !",, women,, lol)
that said,, you cant say its to sharp can you LOL

He is supposed to be coming by the house today,, ( ok so technically his momma is bringing him by),, I will have a little airplane talk with him,, show him my bench, and discuss CA adhesives and xacto knives ,, just so he gets the safety lecture early,, after all, he is already a week and a half old,,

No problemo Mark, my pleasure. I hope it offers a bit of inspiration for a future project and that you can find some use for it. We can just consider it my small contribution to slowing down the growth of E-power. ;D

Just think about it.  When the batteries are all flat and you want to go flying, you can fall back on the old IC powered plane, that is if the starting battery is not flat also.   I remember using flashlight batteries one year to start my old McCoy Redhead.  Two people on the batteries and leads.  Myself cranking the engine.

Possibly the very first glo starting battery was the Eveready #6 dry cell.--carbon/zinc at 1.5 volts when new. (that was long before nicds or even alkaline).

WELL it seems I am in need of an airplane to fly locally,, for some reason my Electrajet has made itself non airworthy,, perhaps that slight altercation with terra asphalt in Salem?

anyway, my full fuse Impact is on temporary hold while I throw a profile together,, now,, this profile will be an ,,

wait for it

Impact profile,,

yeah real imaginative right,,
anyway, I started last weekend,, I now have the wing in carbon veil( my first time working with it),, the Stab and elevator is made,,
fuse parts are getting lazered as we speak,,

so i will update if anyone is interested,,
My plan is to have it airworthy within two weeks,, and it will be all painted,,

Very nice Mark!

Curious, what are you going to use for 'filler' in the fuselage skeleton?  From what I can discern, the laser-cut parts form the outer perimeter, and I assume will be 'skinned'.  I seem to recall Dirty Dan or perhaps Howard making mention of spyder foam in a post from years gone by, is that your plan as well?

actually Pat Johnston turned me on to sheets of white foam that are 1/2 inch thick available from Home Depot,, that will be the filler.
In the past I have used just 1/8 ribs to form that substructure,, but this will be better,,
oh,, and he is laser cutting the foam for the filler as well,,

thanks for the comments

well I got parts tonight for the fuse,, Pat did a masterfull job with balsa selection and cutting,
now tomorrow I can start building the fuse in earnest,,
there are 6 parts to the fuse perimeter,, actually 12,, two layers of 1/4 inch, it cuts much cleaner than 1/2 balsa does,

it all looks like it will layout well,, so hopefully if things go well I can start doing some gluing tomorrow night,,

the wing is in CF Veil and doped,, flaps are shaped and ready for dope and tissue,, elevator and stab same,,

a few more update pictures,,
got the fuse parts glued together,, inspected the battery box parts,, seems the CAD guy made a miscalculation in his layout,, probably in a hurry to get files off to the cutter,, so I will beat him over the head tonight with a dead battery,, and figure out how best to remedy his oversite,,

Randy,
I am working on a profile because I can crank it out in short order,, then finish the full fuse version where I can take my time,, the profile is more local field friendly,,and practice able,, I expect to have this done in a couple weeks,, whereas the full fuse version will take more time to finish properly,, plus,, I stuffed my profile Ejet in Salem,,

Bill, are you refering to the long term build of the bf 109,or the fact that it has suffered structural failure after a few dozen flights,, neither should be a problem on this one,,
I hope?

Rob,, YES,,, you do,, its been awhile,,

ok so heres the latest shots,, got some work done on the nose,,
the battery box is 1/8 lite ply, it has tabs from the fuse that key into the upper and lower sections,, which will tie into the leading edge of the wing.
the sides key into the upper and lower, and the firewall is keyed into all four light ply parts,, the firewall is 4 layers of 1/16 ply epoxied together,,

its coming along slowly,, the wing is slid in place for fitment and is covered in dope and carbon veil,,
I keep having trick ideas for enclosing the electonics,, but keep fighting the urge and trying to keep it simple,, I may end up just strapping them onto the fuse keel below the battery box,, though the thought of enclosing them in a cowling is tempting,,
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Just remember: if it works it's f***ing beautiful!!!.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

well I know it will work Tim,, but, it would be nice if it was clean enough to serve as a backup for PA if needed,, I know I flew my Ejet profile better than the Avenger, but the appearance points for the Avenger made the difference,,

Don't fight the urge Mark. The ugly electrical bits hanging all over significantly take away from the appearance of many otherwise good looking models. Visible velcro straps are about as cool as velcro tennies. Build something you'll be happy with, and also be proud to show up at the field with. y1

Thanks WW
It will be clean,,
I hope it will be attractive,, but I have a tendancy to go overboard and then not be brave
Thats one of the reasons My Electra Jet was good,, I flew it with more confidence,, so thats my ultimate goal with this,
I need something to fly NOW,, I hope to be flying it in a couple weeks,, ( less if I have my way)
THanks for checkin in,, keep me in line and if ya see something ugly call me on it,,

Not to mess up your thread here Mark, but for the electric fanatics here's something new. It was todays big news at work...

Cut a slot right underneath the battery box, and center the ESC and timer in the fuse, stuck to the box.  There should be room to dress the wires out of the way even if you just leave it hanging in the breeze, and it should be easy to cowl in if you want it prettier.

Then for rev 2, make the battery box taller with a shelf in the bottom: battery in the top compartment, the rest of the 'lectronics in the bottom (after, of course, insuring adequate airflow).

that is kinda what the plan is,, there is actually an air inlet where the scoop would normally be,, its hollow back under the battery box,, I am going to penetrate the ply doublers and the ESC will go into that opening with air from the scoop blowing over it,,

whether or not I cowl it in,, well we will see how it shakes out,, i have a couple idears,,
thanks for the comments guys
