Front and rear mount an emax motor
« on: April 10, 2012, 08:32:35 PM »
I have been using the EMAX BL2832/06 in all my C/L models so far and have rear mounted them and have not had any problems as others have reported.I am designing a new model and wish to support the motor at both ends to prevent any problems that may arise. The problem is the EMAX motor has no provision for mounting on the can end. I have 2 -1/2 years experience with these motors with no problems an don't want to change brands. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks ,Noel.

Thanks Wynn, I was trying to make a bulletproof setup,The thought was to leave some of the shaft out the back for a bearing but I need all the shaft I can get out the front with what I am trying to achieve, Noel.

Noel,
I doubt I would change things either, but if I were to decide I wanted to support the motor at the other end, I would just buy or make a longer shaft. Most,if not all, are interchangeable betwen brands. You just need to know your thickness, 4mm,5mm,6mm. Most that we use are 5mm a few cheaper motors have 4mm.

Thanks William ,That's the reply I was looking for ,It's 5mm now I just have to find a longer shaft. I don't have a motor in the house at the moment so will have to measure it tomorrow,Then to find one that's longer.Noel.

Noel,
It seems it the firewall mount if very solid the rear mount is fine. There have been some that have added an external front bearing that is positioned between the can and the prop drive. These usually are bolted to the fuse so you can remove them when you need to take the motor out. I think there is a picture either in the "List your setup" or in a separate thread you could search. I have used the front mount and found that as long as the mount firewall is very solid (I use 3/16" plywood saturated with CA and glued and small wood screwed to the fuse 1/32" ply doubler) there is no movement and less benefit from the external bearing. If the mount firewall is thin lite 1/8" plywood the external bearing is a must as it mount will allow the motor to move during maneuvers.

Best,  DennisT

Noel,
Here is a picture of what I've put together to do what you are after.  The cage mount is a stock item from one of the electric suppliers (can't remember which right off).  A bearing (from Boca Bearing) is mounted in the front end.  So ... the motor is rear mounted to the cage ... the cage is mounted to the firewall .... the front of the shaft is supported by the bearing in the cage.  ( in this case I had to trim a bit of the fan diameter off to fit in the cage).  I also purchased some 5mm ground rod specifically to make longer shafts for motors lke the EFlite 32.

I haven't flown the cage arrangement yet, with my current run of luck, there's no telling what will happen :-)
