Cosmic Wind FINISHED - Conversion Kit Now Available
« on: August 11, 2013, 08:16:56 AM »
I posted the framed up pix a few weeks ago.  The project got set aside while i worked on some others, and actually got to out to FLY(!!!) some.  Got working on it again last weekend and here it is.

The bird is a mostly stock Brodak kit with newly designed electric conversion kit parts added.  The most obvious change is the second cheek cowl; motor's X-Mount was modified into a "+" mount, aligned with the fuselage and the dual cheeck cowls.  The motor is still exposed, but a little less prominent, the appearance of the second cheek is really a nice touch.

There is a lite ply shear web added between the main spars and extends 1 extra bay into the outboard wing.  The battery goes into the pocket built into the O/B wing.  With the batt on the wing the vertical CG is actually better than the IC powered version.  BTW, the 8 oz battery is 1.5" (to center) offset fron the center of the fuselage.  1.5 x 8 = 12 oz.-in.  The tip rib is about 20" from the center of the fuselage.  That means that weight of the offset battery has the same effect as .6 oz of tip weight located at the last rib - serendipity!  I built in a little slug (.4oz) of weight too.  Probably a little more weight than it will need - someone else can worry about that.

The ESC is tie strapped to a platform built onto the bottom of the fuse just behind the LG.  It kind of disappears from view and it will cool very well there.  Ran the motor wires THROUGH the fuelage as a means of "looming" them, but frankly that does not look as clean as I hoped,  I will probably revise that back to a normal scheme with the wires strapped to the side.

Back in 1947 there were 3 Cosmic Winds built by Tony Levier Associates for the original Goodyear Trophy races; #3 "Little Tony" (red with white trim), #4 "Minnow" (bronze with cream trim) and #5 "Ballerina" (metallic green with cream trim)  thus there was an easy opportunity for a scale racing color scheme to make this one stand out a bit from the red/white box art of the Goldberg & Brodak kit. I used white trim cuz I could not fond a good alternative for the cream color.

The bird uses the Brodak EPS-35 Sport power package (except ESC)  This consists of an Arrowind 2815 motor, 4Sx2200 pack and Hubin FM-0c Timer.  I had some extra 35A ESC's laying around so I substituted one for the 40A ESC that comes with the EPS-35 Sport package.  It is fitted with a 9x4.5EP prop, and I have plans to also fly it with a 9x6EP prop for extra SPEED!  I would like t get this up to a reliable 75MPH and use it to develop some event ideas I have,  Purely for Stunt/Sport, the 9x4.5EP or a 10x5.8EP would be the ticket.

RTF weight is 30 oz.

Going to look at a similar approach for the Shoestring and Buster, the challenge there will be the shoulder wing lay-out and getting the battery close to the wing center for vertical CG. control.

I really like this approach and invite/challenge others to try similar approaches on their profiles with firewalls.  Then collectively we need to take a look at the profile rulles, and arrive at a profile definiition that accommodates the good things being accomplished on contemporary IC & electric profiles.

Finally got the instruction manual finished, the Electric Conversion kit for the Brodak Cosmic Wind Profile is now avaialble, item BH-1946 for $14.99.

Test flew the proto a couple weekends ago - needs some nose weight.  Showed if off at the Signal Seekers contest to great reviews.  The dual cheeks look really good brace the firewall and help capture & direct airflow around the engine.

Working on the Shoestring & Buster layouts.  Of course am planning on dual cheek arrangements for both, with the pack tucked in underneath.

Dude that is nice!  Reminds me of my old Goldberg version I had when I was a kid.  I had both the Shoestring and the Cosmic Wind.  Nice job Dennis.
