Title: Motor tail bearing - what sizes
Post by: Dennis Toth on August 26, 2011, 08:23:41 PM
Guys,
I want to add a tail bearing to my AXI 2826-10. I have a few tail shafts that measure a 5.94mm. This puts it just a little lose with a 6mm bearing. What tail shaft has been used (where do we purchase it) and what bearing?

Thanks,              DennisT

Hi Dennis,
Last time we did this was with a bushing to fit a bearing with an 8mm i.d.
you might try using a piece of 0.001" shim stock to take the slop out of the fit between the parts you have.
What you'll probably find is that the prop adapter has some runout, too.

take care,

Guys,
I ordered the AXI tail shaft today, they call it a "Radial Mount Set", it is specific for the AXI which is a three bolt mount. I think the shaft is a little larger then some of the others so I am hoping the bearing will fit with close fit. I heard that skate board bearing fit perfect, will let you all know once I get it set up.

Skate-board bearings:
standard "608" size, with a bore of 8 mm, an outer diameter of 22 mm, and a width of 7 mm.

Not a bearing expert but will a skate board bearing stand 8 to 10K rpm?  The above size bearing from McMaster-Carr costs $12.33 and is rated at 34,000 RPM

Dennis
I too used the Radial Mount Shaft (AXI # RMS2820) to rear mount/support the motor.  Mine is 6mm diameter, so that I don't have to use the the nut I use a flanged bearing and put the flange to the motor side of the plate.  I got mine from Boca it is 6mm ID, 12mm OD and 4 mm wide.  Boca Number MF126-ZZ Radial Bearings  $8.95

Guys,
Thanks for the info for the AXI, I have a Radial Mount System (RMS2820) on order, seems everyone is out of stock till October.

Anyone do one for a Hacker 30XL10? I think they have a 5 mm ish bolt on tail shaft.

Guys,
I added the tail bearing to the Hacker 30XL10, used a flanged bearing model MF106-22 from Boca Bearing ($4 each). It is a 6mm ID, 10mm OD. I used a piece of 1/8" lite ply and drilled a 25/64" mount hole, harden it with CA and glue it to the fuse. This bearing will also fit the Turnigy tail shafts.

I flew it this morning and it made a very noticable improvement to the feel of the ship in inside manuevers with the pusher setup both in dead calm and in 12+ wind. As the wind came up you could feel a very solid positive control up top as well. Try this mod you will like it.
