Motor Shopping? There's a ton!!

Started looking for a Motor for the TEXACO 13. Can't finish the nose with a motor and I do want to decide quickly.

I see these Badass motors aren't being given away. 74.00 and change for the 3530.

It's actually the 3520-790.

Anything as good or better for less money?

What will be the "final" weight?  Most all of the better electrics are around that price or more.  BadAss is as good as you are going to get quality wise without going to Europe and price wise without going to China.  Cobra is a close second.  The prices do not drop as much as you would like as the size gets smaller.  I am guessing that a 2820 in the 1000kv range will be enough and you can use a lighter battery that way.  The 35xx is a .60 - .75 IC equivalent.  If you are not going after aerobatics, save on the ESC and timer.  A smaller motor will allow a smaller ESC.

FYI if you don't know already, it is the 3rd and 4th numbers that determine motor length.

First question after how big is the model. Is it a model for just flying occasionally? I have used the Leopard motors from Altitude Hobbies with very good luck on many of my sport models. They seem to be nearly as good as the Cobra motors if not just as good for less cost. Don't get me wrong my fleet includes several Cobras and BadAsses. I just don't invest that much on an the "occasional" airplanes.

Be cautious about the motor numbers, not all are consistent how they define their motors. Always check the wattage. For a 60 size model you need around 900 watts bigger is not bad and a spin of around 700kv. The ZTW ESC's, also available from Alititude work very well, include a decent governor and are inexpensive. They are my go too for other than PA and likely would work just fine there too. Best battery for the dollars are the Hobby Stars via RC Juice. 

The Leopard 4260 is about the same motor as the BA 3520 at 1100 ish watts and is $60 v $75.

This is the model, in case you wish to add comments or take away. I have no Idea what the model will weigh at this point.  my weight scale needs a battery.

52" in span, heavy scale gear and spats, plus chubby scale fuselage. Looking at the photos in the build might help?

I'm not loading this model up with all kinds of detail, I plan on flying this one. Reason the build is sloppy.

How much is it going to Weigh and what prop would you run on it? The motor you were looking at is far too much. Eyeball wise that airplane would work with a 40 or 46. that's roughly 500-700 watts electric.

This would be my sport flying package for a 40 size airplane running an 11x6 ish propeller. I would select either of the two motor options:

Timer, Hubin FM-0c with remote start switch. I've used a bunch of different timers. This one is my go to. I have 6 or seven of them in airplanes. The reason I like them is because they are easy to program. Just dial a power, with a screw driver and set the time, with a screw driver. Easy peasy. No need for the extra confusing programmer costing $40 -$80 The way I set the power is to start the motor use my tach and dial in the RPM. Done. Test flights dial the pot to min. Done. The later version FM-0c timers without the remote can have one added to the board as the board is the same between the two timers. This works out fairly well as the timer can be started from either button.

One other thing that you'll need is an arming plug. I use a very simple method. I run the ground wire out of the airplane and use a bullet plug. The socket I just lightly CA in to the side with a balsa block inside.

What a guy!

This TEXACO 13 has a 7" diameter cowling, so I'd like to spin a 13" prop to get good air over the cowling. Also, those aircraft had really large props, so I'd like to have some visual tradition. Smoothie wing, so the model, if powered a bit could do some stunts. Wingovers are nice. I can do wingovers.

I kinda figured. I had a smaller motor initially but reviewing what you're doing dropped the lower power motors.  Both of those motors will run a 13" prop. Maybe drop down to the next lower Kv prop in the 700 - 800 range in the same frame size.
