Motor size for Super Ares (see if I am close?)
« on: November 23, 2009, 08:31:10 PM »
I am planning on building a Super Ares this winter and plan on doing it up electric from the start.I am planning on it being light .I have used Dean's formula for motor sizing and came up with what I think should be good  :-\  Scorpion 3026-890SII . .75 x 14.4 x 890=9612 rpm / they have a rating with 14.0v APC 12-6 9050rpm so I  think this should be good .I am looking at the 3026 over the 3020 as this is a larger ST46 sized plane. It will be using the Castle Phoenix 50 Ice light with a Hubin SB2 in governor mode 4s.Do I sound about right in motor sizing. Please tell me if you see a whoops about to happen  %^@   Thanks Dennis   ;D

Well I guess all your time spent answering questions and writing technical articals works Alan.We with little electric power knowledge can read all your info and put something together. Thanks for your time and efort  ;D
Do you feel that the 3026 is a better option on this size plane than the 3020 or am I still in a size plane that a 3020 is good.I understand that it is better to be  oversized than undersized.

I'm using the 3020 in my Vector (with a 12-6 prop), and probably will use it in my Brodak P40 Arf. But then I already have these motors, so it is a no-brainer to try them out first.

I am not really acquainted with the Super Ares but if it is in that size range, the 3020 probably should work fine. But also the 3026 will work well too, but be a little heavier, but a bit more efficient than the 3020.

Hello Alan I should have given some more info ,the Super Ares is designed around a ST46.It has approx a 61" span and is quite a bit larger than a Vector. It is along the size lines off the USA 1 ? I have a SII 3020-780 that is mounted in a ARF Vector (just finished up the mount system tonight). This is to be my electric ginny pig.   :)
My only unknown is weight at this time.   Thanks Dennis

I use the 3026-890 in my SV11 and its way more than enough. I don't know the numbers of the Super Ares. but I am sure that this motor will be fine.

Dennis P,

I cant speak from experience, but I am going to use a 3026 in my Geo-XL which will be about the same size.  This is a large model at 62" and 750 sq in.  My target weight is 58-60 ounces ready to fly.

Good luck on the Super Ares.  That is a beautiful model.

Great pix.

Notice the ground shot and no visible exhaust opening.  The Super Ares were powered by K&B 45's (exhaust on the other side) - by today's standards that's somewhat less than an Evo-36.  The Super could have used more power for sure and the motor you called out will provide a solid power-up.

Small word of caution: I would bet the Super Ares plans show a LG designed for 11" props - you should plan on at least a 12x6 pusher and thus you will probably want to lengthen the landing gear a little.
