Motor brands and sizes
« on: June 08, 2024, 10:19:12 AM »
I am looking for a motor to replace the BadAss 2320 820Kv that weights 92 gm (3.26oz) with something about the same Kv (4S 1800mah pack) but 1/4 - 3/8oz heavier. The next size up (28xx) in the BadAss line is 3/4oz heavier. The reason for the change is I have about 5/8oz of nose weight that I want to reduce and I would rather have slightly more motor than dead noses weight. There is a Cobra motor that is hits the KV and weight, but I haven't used them and was wondering if they hold up?

I ran Cobra's for years.  Both 28 and 35 sizes.  They are a quality level beneath BadAss but above most others.  The only failure I had was one where I fried it by stupidity.  One survived a direct hit from the paved circle jumping up and hitting it head on.  Didn't even have to change the bearings.  I don't think you will have a problem.

I suspect that you won't have the same problem, but for slightly different reasons than Ken.  My first iteration at electric CL used a Cobra motor, which I ended up frying.

When I replaced it with a BadAss motor I immediately saw things cool down.

If you replaced a BadAss with a Cobra of the same weight and Kv, I would expect that it would run hotter.  But if you're replacing a BadAss with a bigger Cobra, and if you have plenty of cooling, then you may be OK.

Personally, I'd consider a motor that's bigger just to be bigger to be deadweight, and rather than changing an installation that works just fine, I'd just run what I have.  If you feel a need to change anything, and you're not already there, put the nose weight as far forward as you can without hanging it on the rotating assembly -- even an inch farther forward should be about 10% more leverage from the CG, meaning that you need 10% less weight to get the same effect.  Maybe sand off the nose ring and replace it with tungsten, brass, or depleted uranium.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.
