Title: Motocalc
Post by: Tim Wescott on July 23, 2011, 12:18:45 PM
Does Motocalc still exist?  Does anyone use it?

I remember it being essential if you wanted to get anything to function back in the brushed motor/nicad days.  Now with LiPos and brushless motors there seems to be enough excess efficiency that you can slap any old thing together and have it work.  But for getting absolute peak performance, it would seem that Motocalc or it's ilk would be a good thing.

A quick search with Google showed that it's still around.  Free download good for 30 days.  To use it longer than that you need to resister and pay $39.

I use it all the time. You need good motor parameters, but it does have a large database. It is actually a simulation program which tries to give you a look at the full flight envelope. It is for RC, there is no way to factor in CL factors such as line drag , but that said it is quite a valuable tool in setting up a new plane. You quickly learn how to adjust for the difference in a RC and CL plane. you can size the battery needed, what ESC to use, etc
