As my slow flying Cavalier, epower flew by, smoke trailing from the nose, my first thought was ,"gee, that looks neat"!  What a dumb thought, then I was thinking, "oh, oh, that ones gonna burn to a crisp".

Apparently when the prop gets tangled in grass and stops, you do NOT restart it like an IC engine. You disconnect the battery and let the EC cool, I mean cool.  Three attempts to get it off the wet, long grass so Jim Howell hand launched it for me. It flew awfully slow. Hmm, motor isn't up to speed. Wonder whats going on, then the smoke, that's what's going on. The Castle Phoenix Icelite 50 is toast. Smelly toast.  Plane got scorched. I kept calm. No sense getting all excited, The pit crew did that for me.  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

another excellent example of why people should use the Renecle timers.

Where does one purchase them. I need them. y1 H^^

RSM sells them - or you can get them directly from Keith (although he is busy with his world champs model at the moment)

ditch the Castle ESCs too - get a ZTW or hobbywing Keiths timers work on any ESC as long is there is no governor mode ON/IN the ESC

I didnt believe in these timers until I tried them....now NO going back - I even sold the "high zoot" plett system I had to change out to his system......works better than ever!!

Ty,

I have a KR 2 governor timer.  I just ran a test to see if crud in the prop will hurt anything.  I am running a 4S lipo battery pack a Turnigy 3548 - 900 motor.  The speed controller is a $25  60 amp cheepy from eBay.

I let the motor start and run for about 30 seconds.  I then grabbed the motor with a rag.  When I applied enough perisher to slow the motor down The KR timer simply turned everything off.  I will bring it to the next meeting and demo the shutdown for the club.  I am sold on the KR timer.  The only disadvantage is that you must solder the yellow wire from the KR timer to one of the 3 motor leads.  However anyone that wants to do electric needs to learn how to solder.  I have had 50 years of pratice so for me it is easy.

Thanks for the nice comments about my timers, guys. I burnt out my last Jeti Spin esc getting snagged in the grass so this was where the motivation to shut it down came from. My target group when I started out with the project was beginners and sport fliers, and the last thing that you need when getting started with with something new is to burn out expensive parts like esc's. Snagging the grass or pranging is part of the learning process and if these parts can survive, then this is a real nice feature.

As Wynn mentioned, I'm trying to get my new stunter ready for the world champs (I'll post some pics soon) and it's always a nightmare to get all the other stuff (paperwork etc.) sorted when you travel overseas. I will however be sending Eric at RSM more stock in a day or so, so humble apologies for any delays. I will do my best to keep the supply going a lot better soon. Thanks so much for all the support, as it helps to fund my world champs trip. I really appreciate it.

See what I mean, tall grass.

And, I'm hoping that I've learned a lesson that you pack it up and go home if you cannot see at least part of the main wheels.  I must admit that there were hilarious moments as the model plowed thru the grass, no wheels showing, throwing grass clippings and water drops all over the place.  Shoot, I may even want to see axles on the main gear before starting the motor.

Go get a scrap peice of carpet for flying off of deep grass.   Saves a lot of grief.  Mine is about 30 inches wide by about 12 foot long. H^^

Doc,
Got it.  Sounds like a good plan to me.  I'll watch the curbs for cast-off carpet.
Thanks,

Ty I might also recommend a KR timer, when it senses a prop strike it quickly shuts the power off saving the ESC, Motor, and Battery.  I have personally experianced this problem both ways.  I burned up eveything on the first electric I built when it nosed over in the grass.  Haven't burned up anything since.
