Title: Lithium batteries...how many types?
Post by: Steve Helmick on March 23, 2011, 08:49:41 PM
I know Li-Po is "Lithium Polymer". I know they can burst into flames if not charged correctly. I came across this link

http://lithiumion-batteries.com/default.aspx

for Lithium Ion batteries for boats, cars, mo'sicles, etc. Way not cheap, but they do have some advantages.   I was wondering if they also have charging hazards, like Li-Po's. If they do, putting one in a bass boat is a real bad idea, where the batteries are in close proximity to the oil tank and (large) gas tank(s). Also, are there other types of Lithium batteries? And isn't there likely to be a Lithium shortage sometime in the future?  H^^ Steve

Hi Steve,
Lithium Polymers are lithium-ion batteries.
There are a variety of electrode compositions but these just get better every year it seems.
There are Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries (A123) that don't explode and work quite well. You take a substantial hit in weight but they are good. Just ask Igor. They are not available in the desired wide variety of sizes yet.

Lithium is mined, and the places where it is most plentiful can expect the same treatment as oil-rich regions get now. Give it 10 years.  Oooops ... I never said that.  HB~>

Steve,

This link probably has more than you want to know about Lithium batteries:  mw~

Nope. My link refers to Steve's question:

I did a little reading on Lithium supply. Right now the Lithium battery industry is being driven by the laptop, cellphone, power tool industry.  Right now sales in this area are down which explanes way prices are down on Lipo battries.  If electric cars ever become big then they will drive the research in Lipo technology and perhaps other battery technology.  But anyway for the near term (next 10 years or so) it will only get better and cheaper.  So much so that I believe wet engines in model airplane competition will be for old time events only.
