We lost this important thread in "The Crash". So lets start over and list your set ups. Like airplane, wing area, flying weight, motor, battery, timer, prop, line length (eye to eye), flight time, rpm, lap speed, and mah used. In the "Subject" line list the airplane name, then list your set up in the main area.

I have 2 Ringmaster S-1s
One is an RSM Old Time Legal S-1 kit build. 32 oz
One is scratch built (using RSM S-1 Old Time Legal plans as a guide). 28.5 oz
42" span
383 Sq area
Scratch built has a Turnigy 3245 1000KV (This maybe a little overkill!)
Castle Creations Phoenix 45 ESC (Using Control Line set RPM Governor mode.)
Rhino 4S 1750 20C or Zippy Flightmax 4S 2200 20C Battery
Will Hubin timer FM-2X (custom for CC ESC using Control Line Governor mode set RPM)
(Will now has this timer called FM-2SR at $15)
APC 12-6 electric pusher cut down to 11"
60' lines (eye to eye).
RSM Old Time Legal kit built is the same as above except:
Scorpion 3014-22 motor 892 KV
(Scorpion has replaced this motor with the "new" Scorpion SII-3014-830KV)

Strictly speaking, this plane no longer exists :'(, but during its short life it was a pretty good flyer.
I don't exactly recollect how or why I bought the ARF, but it was pretty cheap and I think Renkar's "It's only a Hobby" 1/2A stunt contest was fast approaching. I was getting a little tired of flying an old hand-me-down TF FLite Streak (irony is I flew that plane in this fall's contest). I also believe that I originally assembled it for my Killer Bee 049, planning to use a Kavin extended Black Widow Tank. As it turns out that didn't work well.
So moving right along, I decided to convert it to electric. At the time I was thinking about the possibilities of making a beginner's electric 1/2A, and thought I would target it with a 2sLipo pack. One motivation was that a beginner might want to use a 6 cell NiMH pack, and that is about the same volts. I also had the motor winding bug back then, and purchased several kits from Gobrushless.com. In the end I went with a GBx1.1 which I wound with 11 turns of 22 gauge wire (this is a 9 tooth stator with 12 magnets). My kV was ~2300 rpm/V. This was a bit on the low side, and since I was limited to a 6" diameter prop (Renkar rules), it was important to get as high a pitch as possible.
Here was the final setup.
Brodak Baby Clown ARF.
GBx1.1 wound 11 turns of 22 gauge wire--kV~2300rpm/V weight = 1.3oz
Thunderpower Lite 2s730mAHr Lipo (weight=1.14oz with connector)
JMP-2 timer
CastleCreation Thunderbird 9A ESC (no governor mode)
APC E 6x5.5 prop (just one!)
All up flying weight is 6.9oz (plane alone=3.9oz)
I flew on 35 foot lines. Beginner pattern (used in contest) used no more than 1/2 the pack capacity.
Here is a photo with an early attempt at using a multiblade prop!

Lap times are a little quick at 4.9 sec -this is running at 10,200 rpm will be taking this down to 9800 or so to slow it down a little.
Flight Time set to 5m 30sec gets me through the pattern and 6-7 laps after putting various amounts back in to pack from 2675 to 3525!!!!!! The larger limit was at 6minute flights so hoping I can get it stabilised a lot lower
only had 12 flights so far

Here is a trivia question I would like to see if anybody knows the answer.
I named my plane after a plane that was used in a TV series many many years ago. What is the name of the TV series? In fact, the series had a contest. Listeners were asked to submit names for the plane and the best one would be used. Needless to say, I was not the winner.
I hope my set up information is helpful.
I made one error above, the time is set in governor mode and the RPM are about 8800

On the test bench this setup gives me 300 grams/10.6 oz. static thrust @ 7 amps. This conversion of the stock SIG kit results in a tail heavy plane. I had to mount the battery right up front. I would suggest lightening the tail during build if you would like to try it yourself. It flies great, perfect for a learner like myself.

Here's the latest addition to my Firecracker stable of models (number 5!) - This one is a totally dedicated Electric model, previous electric aeroplanes I've had have been 'retro-fitted), the last one was a pull-apart Firecracker model that I built a new fuselage for. It flys very well at 5.8s/lap on 68.5 ft lines (centre to centre) so hopefully this new one will go just as well or better.
The new model weighs in at 56.5oz complete with battery and all electrics. Have some other batteries on order which are apparently around 3oz lighter so that will bring down the weight even more.
Using an Arrowind 2832 motor, an APC pusher 13 x 4.75" prop (to start with) and currently 3600mah batteries - (have the 3000 mah on order), Hubin FM2 timer + Phoenix Ice 50 ESC.

Will Moore's Electric "Thunder Cloud"
This is the electric variant of the John Ashford design. It originally had a Saito 62 ,4-stroke for power.
Seems to fly equally well with the electric setup. I used this model for a testbed in working up
a power system for a Yatsenko electrified Shark. The "Thunder Cloud" took 1st place
at the Wrentham, MA, Mass Cup contest in September 2010.
The e Shark I am building should equally perform, if not better.
Any questions, contact me at 44willmoore@gmail.com
Setup:
Motor - Plettenberg Orbit 30-16 outrunner
Sequencer - Hubin FM- 9 timer with remote start button
ESC - Shultze F2b dedicated control line
Battery - Thunder Power Lite 2nd generation 3900 mamps 5 cell Li-Po
Props - various 13 to 14 inch, 6-7 inch pitch pusher and tractor
Weight - 72 ounces with battery ready to fly
Lines - 64 to 66 foot, eye to eye .018 braided SS
Energy used in 6 minute flight - 2200 to 2300 mamps
Has plenty of power and battery has plenty of headroom.

Noel Corney's SV11 ARF
Model is a Brodak SV 11 ARF. I replaced the leadouts ,wheels are narrow electric 2-1/2 in and the cowl is held on with magnets. I have a baffle in the cowl inlet at approx 45 degrees pushing air onto the motor and a 1 in round exhaust with a cowl vent to remove hot air from the motor. I have no cooling problems with either battery or controller.
I have fitted a battery isolator as the tank/battery area is very tight, this allows the model to be set up for flight at any time.

Encouraged by experiences gained from so far from approx. 50 flights with Signorina Elettra, I have now converted an IC airplane into an electric stunter. The conversion was fairly easy to do and took less than 4 weeks time. Originally, PC-21/2 (another of my Trivial Pursuit Special Edition derivates) was equipped with a PA .75 on pipe and at 62.8 oz it was not really heavy. However, adding the weight of Ύ of its 210 cc fuel capacity brought the mid-pattern flying weight up to 67.5 oz. Here is the current data for the e-converted version of PC-21/2:
PC-21/2 E
Span: 60 in
Area: 703 in/sq.
Flying weight, with Battery: 64.3 oz
Motor: AXI 2826/12
Propeller: APC 13 x 4.5 E Pusher,
Battery: DesirePower V6 SP 2'600 mA/h 18.5 V (5S)
ESC: Castle Creations ICE lite 75A
ESC operation mode: C/L and Governor High
Timer: Will Hubin FM-9 with extd. leads
Programmer for timer: Will Hubin FM-9 Programmer with New Phoenix High Mode
RPM: 9'800 RPM, governed
Motor full RPM runtime:5'20"
Speed: 5.3 sec / lap on 64ft x 0.015in eye-eye lines

Sultan e #2
Guys I just completed Sultan-e #2
Weight is 48.5 oz without battery- .1 oz less than the prototype (in post #64 above)
Wing span is 60.5", Area 686 in sq. same 14.4 % (with flaps) wing as posted in #64
With statics set to the same as prototype it flies remarkably like the prototype.
One of the noticeable differences is that this airplane howls like a siren. I believe this is because the volume of air being forced through the motor. The motor is cold upon landing. (see picture 5)
Motor is an AXI 2826/12; ESC is a Castle ICE Lite; Hubin FM-9 Timer system set to 9634 RPM for a APC 13X4.5 Pusher prop; ThunderPower batteries. Virtually all the same settings as delineated in the "Cookbook" see sticky in this Forum.

All ESC wires, except connection to timer, are cut to minimum length and soldered together. Battery is located under the plane at the CG. Covering is Polyspan with a couple of coats of dope. With the 7x5 prop the landing gear will need to be modified to give the prop tips more clearance.

Impact ARC by Doug Moon/Brodak
E-Flite 46, 12Pole, 670 kV, CC ICE 50 Amp ESC with Turnigy 6S 3000 mAh LiPo battery
APC 13-4.5EP prop, 67 ounces. 5.6 second laps on 67 ft .015 lines and 10100 RPM
energy consumption is 2050 mAh for full pattern plus 5 extra laps
Covered with Ultracoat. I crashed this plane on the 4th flight, and the rebuild added about 2 Oz.
The battery is embedded in the LE back to the first spar, and the nose was shortened 1.25 inches, plus the usual routed out IC motor mounts and an added 3/16 5 ply firewall mount for the motor. Cooling air enters through the nose scoop and exhausts at the tail through the elevator horn adjusting holes. Not too elegant but flies well. Nicest landing airplane I've ever had. Could have used 2600 mAh battery and saved some weight.

Rhino 3700 required to keep governor proper for full flight. If too small a battery wind up can occur at ending maneuvers in wind as pack runs down. No issues with Rhino 3700. CL sport model - Camera plane
My own design as a camera platform to get airborne video and pictures
I drew my own plans, this model was built in 1996 and needs a new paint job!
span 80"
Area: 1120 sq inches
weight less battery 9.4 lbs
weight battery 2.3 lbs
launch weight 11.7 lbs
motor E-Flite E-60
esc: phoenix 60
prop apc 16X6EP
battery: 2S, 5000 Mah x 3, wired in Series to make a 6S
line length 60 ft
Using a Castle ICE 75 amp speed control with data logging
normal cruise is at 30 amps, 63 watts per lb
A gentle take off run requires 600 Watts, or roughly 30 Amps
If pushed to 750 Watts, I can take off in less than 1/4 lap and climb out rather quickly
Normal cruise throttle setting is at 55 to 60% throttle setting
If I want to I can apply full power I can climb to 45 degrees or almost climb vertical on a short takeoff run
I use a JR radio for the DSC electronic controls, the signal and ground go down the flying lines to control the throttle with the speed control
This model can not do aerobatics due to it's size and weight, it was designed to be stable camera platform.
At full power the motor pulls 60 amps and measured at 1140 watts of power at full throttle.
When flown at 1/2 power the model can be flown for over 15 minutes and only reduced each 2S battery from 8.4 to 7.6 volts. The 5000 Mah capacity is actually more than I need.
comments: This model was converted from glow (OS-91FX) to brushless electric to learn about these systems. This model is a big airplane and has considerable line Tension during flight. The model has 5" main wheels. The specs for the E-60 says it can fly a model between 8-10 lbs, this model comes in over 11 lbs and the E-60 still has enough power to fly the model. This motor gives me 97 watts per lb, but I never fly at full power so I am only using 63 watts per lbs to cruise at 1/2 power.

Electron 2
O.K I finally decided to post my own models here now that there many of my governor timers flying and they are working well. My first Electron had an MVVS 4,6/840 motor in it, and it was a little on the low power side to fly the 1910 gram beast. I therefore modified the model, managed to knock off 100 grams and used the bigger MVVS 6,5/910 motor. This has worked well for the last 2 years now.
The simple governor timer works by reading the rpm pulses from one of the motor wires and then uses this in a feedback loop to keep the rpm constant. I have won at 2 Nats and one SA Masters with this setup. The weight of 1810 grams (64 oz) is still too heavy, but it flies quite well.
If you need any more info on this system, have a look at my website:
http://www.keithrenecle.co.za/Electric%20CL.htm
Here are the specs:
Wingspan 57,5 inches
Wing area 670 sq. inches
Motor MVVS 6,5/910
ESC Hobbywing Pentium 60 amp (I have used many of the low cost esc's without governors as well)
Prop APC 12 x 6 E (pusher/tractor or ZOAR 12 x 7)
Battery 3300 mAh 4-cell (many types)
Uses 1800 mAh for 5:30 flight on 67 foot .014" Staystrate lines in Johannesburg SA. 2300 mAh at sea level

Protron take-apart profile
I built this one to see if it is practical to make a take-apart profile and also to see if I could hide all of the usual wiring and electric components like the esc, and timer etc. The take apart system worked o.k. and the I am really happy with the nose construction. It sure looks neater than those with everything hanging out. Just by the way, I did not misspell "Proton". It is a Profile ElecTron.
Here are the specs:
Winspan 50 inches
Wing area (I have not yet worked it out)
Motor E-Max 2820 (same as Arrowind)
ESC Hobbywing Pentium 40 amp (I've now use the ZTW 40 amp as well)
Battery 2200 mAh 4-cell Lipo
Weight 1250 grams (44 oz) with battery
Uses 1400 mAh for 5:30 flight at high altitude and 1750 at sea level on 65 ft. .015 cable lines (center to center)

57' or 60' insulated lines (2 lines for electronic controls)
Model is flown in CL sport scale with DSC electronic controls for flaps and throttle control
Model is fiberglassed and then painted with latex house paint and used vinyl decals for the G-CEVC
The original kit outlines on the horizontal and vertical tail were wrong so I replaced them with correct outlines from factory drawings.
I also added a scale tail wheel instead of the normal RC tailwheel.

Turnigy 45a "Trust" ESC

Running 5:50 with a z-tron timer, it finishes the pattern and has about 15-20 laps to spare, doing almost exactly 5 second laps and a little under 2700mAh goes back into the packs.
100% power full time.
So after Flying the Legacy a few more times I figured I'd update a few things. When I wrote it was running 100% power all I knew was that it was running at the max the timer could make it go, it turns out that the motor is mechanically limited with a 5s pack at about 10800 rpm so it was reaching that at about 82% of what the esc had in its throttle curve. Any way, I now have it flying what feels like a very slow 5.3 second lap compared to the 5 second laps it was doing before. Thank you to everyone who made suggestions on how to improve it and a very special thanks to Mike Palko for all of his help in getting it off the ground in the first place!

This is what I am using on a 165 sq.in. (including flaps) model. That is about the size of an old style 1/2A stunter of the 60's through 80's. The thing flies great.
Current equipment is a Hacker A20-34 motor swinging a 6 x 5.5 APC prop at 12,500 rpm, an 850, 3S pack, a KR timer and 20 Amp speed control. It flies fine on 42' of Powerline (Spectra). The size and weight of the equipment are aimed at much smaller aircraft than the stuff Andy uses on his Baby Pathfinder.

Thunder Power 3300MAH 4 cell battery. Flight time with 20 second ramp up 6.30 minutes. A small pakage and had hard time getting arming harness in. My next one will have a little more room for this. Lap times about 4.8 a little fast for this old guy but manageable. Plane not yet ready for competition and will be building another this winter.

Reniger ET-1. These were for Christmas presents, to kids that needed everything. I'm including prices for the skeptical:
Turnigy 2S 3S Balance Charger. Direct 110/240v Input (USA Warehouse), TGY-3/24289 = $11.34
ZIPPY Flightmax 800mAh 3S1P 20C (USA Warehouse), Z8003S20C/18636 = $8.00
Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC (USA Warehouse), HK-SS20A/17793 = $7.18
2205C 1400Kv Brushless motor (USA Warehouse), 2205C-1400/26482 = $9.29
Hobby King GT-2 2.4Ghz 2Ch Tx & Rx (USA Warehouse), HK-GT2/15141 = $19.69
That works out to $55.50 with one battery, $63.50 with two.

Flight Trimming Process
April 2013: Insufficient tracking quality (wandering off from initial height) both in level and inverted flight.
June 2013; Trying to improve the quality of tracking in level and inverted flight, the following modifications (one by one but not necessarily in this order) have been done:
C.G. forward to 7.9 in (201 mm) from hinge line
Lead out center 1.67 in (43 mm) behind C.G.
Flat plate flaps TE rounded (was sharp edged)
Needle sharp elevator TE rounded
Replaced Max Bee empennage by the empennage of Crossfire Extreme, installed at +/0° AoA
Motor thrust axis set to +/-0°
Replaced Rabe rudder by an adjustable one
July 6th 2013: Still suffering from altitude hold issue in inverted flight (no wind).
July 27th 2103:
Added 20 in long zig-zag turbulators at 35% of wing chord.
Changed flap-elevator throw ratio to 1:0.8
Set motor thrust axis to +1° for pusher.
C.G. at 199 mm (7.8 in) from hingeline.
Leadout center at 151 mm (5.9 in) from hingeline, 1.6 in rear of C.G.
Outer tip 52 Gr (1.8oz) heavier than inboard tip.
Tracking improved, better level than inverted. Setup list updated.
August 6th 2013:
Removed turbulators at 35% of wing chord
Added turbulators at 1/2 in from stab leading edge
Tracking not as good as with turbulators at 35% of wing chord
August 10th 2013
Removed turbulators from stab
Added 20 in long zig-zag turbulators at 10% of mid wing chord, paralell to leading edge
Removed flap hinge seal
Removed 10 Gr / 1/3 oz tip weight
Lead out centre 1/4 in / 6 mm fwd.
Tracking ok, better than with turbulators at 35% of wing chord. Set-up list above updated

November 9th 2017 Update:
In its July 2016 configuration the airplane, while being a competitive flyer, kept making it difficult for me to accurately maintain 5 ft altitude in inverted flight. Aerodynamic modifications, such as sanding the stabilizer leading edge really sharp and/or installing turbulators at various positions, did not help. From meanwhile experience made with my Fiat C.29 (list your setup, reply 179, update from Nov. 9 2017) I suspected the inverted flight instability having something to do with the combination of conventional (motor & empennage above wing centerline and 0° thrust axis) fuselage layout and (pusher) propeller sense of rotation.
Without any further change to the trimmed airplane I then changed the APC 12 x 6 EP prop to its tractor version 12 x 6 E, running at the same RPM. While slightly reducing line tension at unassisted take-off from hard surface and in outside loops/corners, the change has eliminated the altitude holding problem in inverted flight.
June 14th 2018 Update
For to furter improve corner and overhead linepull I have sealed the flaps and I now use a lightweight wooden 2-blade 13 x 6 tractor prop.

I love the looks of the paint scheme and the colors. Also the reversed canopy is different. You left out the wheel sizes and weight thought(just kidding). A lot of info for one airplane. Hope it flies as well as it looks. H^^

Lotsa pics! Here are a few shots of the top mount battery install. Nylon 1/4 28 bolts used to hold a 1/8" ply plate on top of the battery. The top hatch uses 2 neodeum magnets at the rear and a 1/8" music wire at the front. A piece of brass tube is cemented to the front of the plane where the 1/8" music wire inserts. I like using Anderson Power pole connectors they come apart easier than Dean connectors and are accessable from the bottom of the plane for quick service.

Hi Jason,
The rpm is 9624 on the FM-9 programmer for 5.35. But it's not the actual rpm from the prop. I believe its about 650-700rpm or so higher, close to around 10.300.

I have one baby ringer with the following:
Scorpion 2205/1585KV motor
APC 6 x 4 pusher prop
Rhino 610 mAh 3s
Arrowind 12A ESC nongoverning
Hubin FM-0c timer factory preset to a 7 second delay before the system starts, full throttle, and 3 min flight
7.9 oz AUW
This gives me a 3.3 second lap on 35 ft lines. It goes through wingovers wonderfully and loops well but in lazy eights it does slow down a bit.
I am about to finish another baby ringer. This one will have a 2205/1900KV motor for more speed and thrust. The same type of ESC and timer will be used.

Here is the result of my attempt to build a fixed gear airplane specificly laid out for pusher prop use. Reason was that I have repeatedly experienced difficulties (e-hunting) trimming conventionally laid out airplanes for stable tracking in level- and inverted flight while being flown with pusher props. "Conventionally" meaning motor and empennage 1 or 1 1/2 in above the wing centerline. Wishing to maintain the very noticeably positive effect on line tension of the pusher propeller in outside turns and in the upper segment of the hourglass manoeuvre, switching back to tractor props was not really an option...
In an attempt to compensate level/inverted flight disturbance forces resulting from the propeller/spinner/rotor assy. rotating clockwise (Pusher) and affecting tracking stability in level and inverted flight, I have adjusted the vertical positions of the drive train components and the empennage accordingly. In order to do so it was first neccessary to quantify disturbance forces and compensating measures. This could not have been done without Wolfgang Nieukamp's much appreciated calculations quantifying in-flight propeller gyroscopic forces and resulting moments. From Wolfgangs findings, I have arranged those components accordingly:
- Motor vertical thrust axis angle (2.5° up)
- Motor vertical thrust axis distance from wing centerline (below 10 mm / 3/8")
- Stabilizer angle of attack (1° down)
- Rabe rudder functionality (out with elevator up)
While the dimensions of wing, empennage and the arms are borrowed from Igor's Max Bee, the fuselage was respectfully shaped in memory of the Italian Fiat C.29 1000 hp racing floatplane from the 1929's.
Findings:
The airplane tracks equally nice in horizontal and inverted flight without any e-huntig tendency. Corners and exits are solid with stable exits. Turning rates are equal. Hourglass overhead line tension is good.

This setup save about 1 3/4oz over the commonly use 1800 - 2200 packs. The FINS 40G Spectra lines are very low drag and saved 4% battery capacity compared to 0.012" stainless steel cable that would be used with this size/wt ship
