Just curious.. What size prop (dia & pitch)  do you use with 550Kv motor on 6 cells?

Hi Joe,

I know Sergii Solomianikov from Ukraine has been testing Cobra 3520/18 550kv on 6S with 13.5x5.5 3-blade prop. Recently he told me that the motor perform very well with this prop.
And Pavel Kravchenko uses the same prop with Hacker A40-14S 530Kv also with a great success.

Greetings,
Vitalis

Thanks Vitalis. much appreciate the insights. It makes sense now.. lower Kv motors swings larger props at lower rpms.
That looks like a nice prop. Would you know who makes that one? wouldn't mind getting one to check out.  :)

E Flight make some really good electric motors as well, E Flight 32 KV 770 is a good example (5 cell 13” X 4”).

I have added it to the list, although it's not a 6S motor, but who knows, perhaps someone will find a right setup with it and 6S also. Thanks.

Thanks, I'v added it to the list. Just out of curiosity, what rpm do you get with these props and 510kv motor? And do you use any active rpm regulation?

I get 10500 rpm on the 3 blade. Checked it on the ground. Not sure that was the MAX as it was done with the timer on the ground. I would have to rig something up and bench test to be sure. Yes I use Igor for now. I also have the Fiorotti timer.
More recently I have changed to the 12x6 XOAR electric prop.

Hm, this is interesting. Let's say we have freshly charged 6S battery, that's ~23V under load.
23 x 510 = 11730 rpm.
That means the motor performs at ~90% efficiency. And that's if we don't count other loses.

Looses usually show up as excessive heat, and I can shut down the motor touch it with my hand and a little warm for sure mot hot at all. So I don't really have excessive looses in the system.
I will make a bench test and will update the information.

Anyway I think you should use that motor with a 13x6 prop. Then it will work in it's sweet spot.

I will try the 13in props in the spring after I do the gear modification. That prop might be hurting the corner a little on my model. It is likely that if I go to the 13in diameter I might end up with a 13x7 or even 13x8 and use battery 5S or 4S but that is not the subject of this topic.

Vitalis, you seem to be a big fan of 6S setups.  I might have my ideas as to why, but would you please elaborate for everyone's benefit?
Coincidentally, I'm designing a new airplane for my kid, and this discussion is very useful.

Well, it's a simple story. When four years ago I started look into electrics I read a lot of information and decided that Igor's setup was the most advanced and sophisticated. So I invested in Igor's active timer and that's how it started. And I never regret I did. Actually that saved me a lot of time, because the setup has always been reliable and trouble free, so I could spend more time on flying. And now I don't see a reason I should go other way. Next year I am going to try 550kv motor with the new ukrainian prop, but still this will be 6S setup.

Vitalis :
I'm considering swapping out the E-Flite Power 15(950KV, 5.4 ounces) with  4S passive system in my Caprice (Classic ) for either an AXI or Cobra .  Since you have already done a lot of research, what is a comparable motor  with, of course, a lower KV rating ?
I plan to go 6S with an Active timer; possibly Igor's system. The primary considerations ,as I see them, are weight, KV rating and ability to swing a 3 blade . I believe that a 9" or 10" (at most)  with a 4.5 or 5 pitch three blade would be about right. Need to find out who is producing carbon fibre props of this size that are suitable for our purposes.
Thanks

Coincidentally, I'm designing a new airplane for my kid, and this discussion is very useful.

There is no "automatic" reason for 4 or 6 cells. When I designed 6 cell setup, I used rather higher voltage and lower current because Spin ESC has upper limit 6 cells and it will run at lower current. Plus there were more available motors in usefull range and plus differnce between 6 and 5 pitch prop with the same motor responds to 5 or 6 cells. Usage of constant RPM or active timer setup is also aproximately one cell (6 vs 5 - while 3 vs 4 or 4 vs 5 is already too much). Simply it was easier with 6 cells.  However if you can find proper combination of prop / motor / battery with 4 cells, it is not going to be worse or better than 6, both have some +es and some -es.

If I can recommend something, then use well tested combination of prop - motor - ESC - timer - battery. Only when you see how it should/can work, start with experimenting. There are too many wrong combinations and olny few those well ballanced and it is always good to have chance to compare  :)

I see the Scorpion 3026 710kv is on this list. I have one of these motors. Though go to Scorpion website and it suggests max 5s battery for this motor. Has anyone successfully run one on 6s? I don’t own any 5s batteries and would rather stick with 6s but don’t want to let the smoke out of this motor.
