I wished electric wasn't so expensive to get into.  I'd have to sell all my glow motors to get a decent electric set-up, with charger, batteries, etc.  One of these days. H^^

COOL - would loe to run another OS in my vectors..........

I would imagine they would be of pretty good quality given OS quality control - will be interesting to see what they retail for

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out -- there's a lot of common knowledge between motors and engines, but there's a whole lot more that ain't.  If someone at the top said "we gotta make motors or we're gonna lose market share" and the rest of the crew said "grumble mumble stupid #$%^ motor" then it'll tank.  OTOH, if the rest of the crew said "Wow!  Let's make this happen, and we'll listen to the people who know motors while we do it" then -- it'll work.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Their is a lot of reasonably priced electric stuff out there.  Especially if you are just wanting to get your feet wet and try electric.  You can actually buy a setup for less than a good 4C engine.  I think the biggest problem is going to be a lack of knowledge.  Us old timers have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours learing how to make wet engines work.  It is hard to start over with a new technology.  The good news is that electric works well almost all of the time.  If you get the right setup for a given airplane it will work very consistently.   The hand writting is on the wall - When OS jumps on the band wagon it is time to join the fun.

I sold all of film based camera equipment several years ago -  while it had some value.  It may be time to dump the gassers on eBay.

Hi Glenn, I can only endorse what John says here. You don't need to mortgage your home to fly electric these days. There are some simple motors, esc's and chargers out there that give great performance. Batteries too are now cheaper than buying glow fuel in most cases. The initial cost of the charger is the only extra that you must have. I designed my governor timer system to give very good performance with most low cost speed controllers, so if you get an E-Max/Arrowind motor with an ESC like the Hobbywing, ZTW etc., the cost of the power plant is very much like buying a sport glow engine, and this type of electric system is a lot better overall.

On the OS motor story, I'm sure that OS have seen the proverbial writing on the wall. MVVS did this some years ago and it has worked out very well for them, although the majority of their motors do not work well for C/L stunt. They are "Rolls Royce" quality, and are well suited for the mass market of high performance R/C stuff, especially the powered glider models. It will be interesting to see how the OS motors pan out.

By the way If you are doing scale or just want a sport plane with a throttle, Clancy's electronic throttle works well with all speed controllers - even the $10 ones on ebay.  They are much easier to setup then a wet engine with throttle.

The 3528-750 looks pretty good, I like the larger can diameter which could give a little more torque, hope they use really good low resistance winding.

Hi Keith not to hijack this thread but how many batteries do you take to the feild and what do you have your charger hooked up to. The rc guys at my feild have very elaborate set ups with several batteries and portable generators way over my budget.

I agree with what Keith had to say, it is much better today for getting into electric than just a short while ago.   I was able to get my 1/2a Pathfinder in the air using one of Keith's timer, a low cost Thunderbird ESC and an smaller Arrowind motor.  The smaller batteries are also less expensive and on 45' lines it flies the pattern quite well.  I take five batteries with me, I get five flights and have fun.

The hand writing is on the wall, electric is taking over from IC for a number of reasons.  Most have to do with R/C, the number one being flying sites in urban areas are getting harder to find.  I fly my plane at a local park with Larry Renger, we never get chased away.  I can't say that for my gasser's.  I wouldn't think about taking one of my gas planes to a local park.  They take up too much space and they make way too much noise.  1/2a gas takes up less space but make a more irritating noise.  1/2a electric answers all the problems.

The gas engine vendors are not blind to these kinds of problems, they really don't care what they sell as long as the continue to sell something.  People who do not live in large urban areas don't have these kinds of problem but we  who do, electric is a real blessing. ;D

I think OS had to do something with brusless electric motors to stay in the game. I have lots of OS engines including some brand new in the box FP's. I just recently got my last electric item I needed to convert my 80" control line camera plane (sport model that carries video and still cameras) to an E-Flite E-60. It took me over a year to get everything due to the cost. But now that I have batteries, charger and a speed control I now just have to get additional motors and speed controls. The power system for this camera plane cost $350 not including the charger.

Glow engines will be still be used, but brushless electric power will become more common place over time. I applaud OS for getting into brushless electric motors.

Yes the cost is expensive at first, but I flew my camera plane for the last time with an OS-91FX engine on Monday. That OS-91FX motor will be retired, and put into storage. Now it will be flown with a JR DSC radio (electronic controls down the lines), E-60, 6S battery and 60 amp Castle speed control. I can now carry a video camera without the engine vibration causing problems.

In the Tower ad, it shows it as a rear mount, anyone know if it can be done as a front mount? Checking against the AXI 2812 it seems the OS has lower resistance, should be a winner.

Hi Dennis.  Here's the OS link. There are a couple links on this page to get to a specs page and a drawings page.

Electric has really leaped forward.  I appreciated your comment, John.  I knew it would get to this, seven (7) years ago when I entered my first contest,
after a 40 year break from the sport, in North Hampton, MA with an electric Nobler, totally hacked up and electrified.  I placed 2nd in Advance, and landed with the applause of the entire
crowd, as if I was Charles Lindberg, and I just landed in Paris.   I will never forget it.   I had no idea what I was doing, and did not have the components
we now have.  It has been an interesting ride, since.  We know so much more, and the equipment keeps getting better and better.

There is no better time to jump in.

I completely agree, My first CL scale model with eletric power was a 80" span Piper Cub with an Astro Flite 40 with a super gear box and a 21 cell Nicad pack. That was back in the 1996 time frame. I used electronic controls with the speed control for throttle control. One of my friends has flown electric power for CL scale for the last 15 years using electronic controls to control the throttle using a normal speed control. He has now converted over to Brushless and Lipos.

Now that brushless motors and Lipo batteries are commonlly available we are now seeing kits and ARF's designed for electric power. It use to be that you had to modifiy a kit for electric power because it was designed for glow power. I just picked the E-flite AT-6 ARF for sport flying. This model has a 56" span, features retracts and flaps and will also have throttle. But what struck me the most was that it was designed from the ground up for electric power, you would have to go out of your way to install a glow engine on this model.

I still have a bunch of glow engines and I am now building a CL scale (great planes RV-4, 55" span kit) and will be installing a brushless electric motor. I am now considering other projects that would have been very difficult to do with glow engines due to the size of the engine and where to put the muffler. I will continue to have models powered by glow engines, but over time I will be building more with brushless electric power. The cost is a factor, just buy one piece at a time.
