The RC guys have all sorts of stuff that work.

There's a local fun-fly that starts at 12:00AM on New Year's Day; people use glow-sticks taped or strapped to planes.

Either way, I'm not sure I'd want to incur the extra weight.

Yeah, look into LED strip lights.  They work great.  They usually work with a 3S battery.

The trouble is you can't see the ground or terrain.

My son was flying his 'Slow Stick' Saturday with the same kind of set up, but he has a 2" square of white/clear LED's on each wing bottom to see the ground.  It's pretty cool and lots of fun.

I tap into my 3S main battery when night flying R/C.  When the volyage gets too low, the LEDS go off, then the voltage rises again and the LEDS go back on, then the voltage goes low again...you get the picture.  When the LEDS "flash" it's time to land.

My son's Slow Stick has an adapter that goes between the battery connections.
