Li'l Hacker 2
« on: January 03, 2017, 02:20:52 PM »
Just built a pair of the Li'l Hacker 2, with electric motor systems.  It's a foam wing Half-A plane that comes with two sets of parts in one kit.  (See photo)  Strapping tape was added along the trailing edge of the wing for strength.  Full-length wing spars were substituted for the shorter ones in the kit.  Instead of covering, two coats of white glue (thinned with water) were applied to all surfaces. A curved-wire landing gear was installed to enable launching without assistance.  The ESC is a generic one from Ebay.  The Ztron timer is very small, light, and easy to use: it has adjustable pots for speed and time, with a push button to start the motor.

Electric components Installed are:
Motor:  2212,  1400KV
Prop:    7"-5p
ESC:     30A
Timer:   Ztron CL Simple Timer
Battery: 3S LiPo, 850 mA Hr

Plan to try it out as soon as a nice day comes around.

Forgot to mention that these planes and also two "Plastic Fantastic" foam planes with electrics are for the kids at an orphanage in NC to fly as soon as the weather warms up, around March or April.  Sergio Zigras kindly donated the ZTRON timers.  Thanks Sergio!

Another plane now being built for the orphanage kids, with electrics and ZTRON timer, is the Baby Ringmaster by Pat King.

Neat project.  I wonder if the foam will survive much abuse without a layer of film to hold it all together.  I use either SLC film or my own supply of 1mil (.001") polyester lamination film.  The film adds toughness that glue alone cannot.  Something to consider.
Laser-cut, "Ted Fancher Precision-Pro" Hard Point Handle Kits are available again.  PM for info.

Thanks.  I'll use covering instead of painting with glue if I make another pair.  As they are now, all-up weight is 10.0 ounces.
