Flying Clown Electric Conversion
« on: October 03, 2009, 11:26:12 AM »
Here is my Flying Clown simple electric conversion. It was originally a gas model. I am still testing power systems. The one shown is a Suppo/BP Hobbies 2217-6 motor with kv=1500 and an APC 8x6 thin E prop. It draws about 16 amps at 11.3 volts (183 W) at 10,000 rpm. I will test fly it again as soon as we get some good weather here in New Hampshire!

For starters I velcro/tape the battery to the wing. Once I am satisfied with the power system, I will cut a pocket in the wing. The plane was purchased used on ebay.

Looks good.  How does it do with electric?  I am thinking of doing the same, but have to get another clown.  What electric setup did you use? H^^ D>K

I have flown the clown as an electric over the past year with several different motors. Currently I am using a Turnigy 35-30B 1400Kv motor with an 8X4 prop. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2141
I don’t have my notes handy but I think I am getting about 13K on a 3s battery.  The plane is very stuntable with this combo. It is flying at about 200w/lb. The RTF weight is 16oz with a 1800mah 3s 20c battery.

Steve

The motor prop setup is listed in the first post. I fly it on 50' lines. I am using two 3S 850 or 1000 mah batteries in parallel to get 1700 to 2000 mah total capacity.

#^ H^^ Hi Jim, I am very interested in your clown.  I have just finished a scratch built one and hope to get it flying soon with an electric motor.  I have a Super Tigre ST .10 outrunnter KV1250 motor on it.  The battery is a matched Super Tigre 1250 mAh 11.1V 15C 14 Wh.
How do you mount the battery, ESC and timer?  Photos would be great please.
This is my 1st attempt at electric, so please excuse the dumb questions.
I guess I need a wiring diagram to put it together.
