Kit Bashed Brodak P40 to P47
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:16:00 AM »
All,

For those of you not at Brodak I thought I would share my newly Created P47. Not wanting to fly my little magician again this year against the larger P40s and Cardinals, etc etc. I was looking at my old P40 hanging on the wall with  its glow engine and looking to fly again.

3 long days later I have what you see in the pictures, I had about 5 test flights on it prior to Brodak, but was still not quite happy with its flight trim. Thanks to me bud Joe Gilbert and Mike Donovan, we did a little massaging of the control system and I was lucky enough to place first in advance profile. Thanks guys

Here are the specs and pictures, I have some basic plans/drawings almost completed. I can scan them and post for anyone that is interested in a couple of weeks, just let me know and I will get the particulars to you as soon as possible.

Sorry I forgot to post the specs, Here they are:

Weight: 50 oz with battery (battery weighs 16 oz)
Motor: e-Flite 15 950 KV
Battery: Turnigy Power Systems 4S 3600, 30-40C
Prop: APC 12-6 Thin Electric (Pusher)
Controller: Castle phoenix 45 (governor Low mode)
Timer: ztron set at 68% Power
Lap time: 5.2
Amp Draw: 2750 for 6 minute flight

Note on setup: This plane could use a little larger motor as well, the 15 draws a few more amps than I would like, and to get the performance I want, even at 68% of the available power, an e-flite 25 would be a perfect.

Tim.
Your P47 made mine look bad, so I left mine in the car. I watched a couple of your flights with that setup and it impressed me. You guys are going to get me into electric soon.

John,

Your P47 last year at NVCL was the inspiration for mine, I really liked the look. Don't get me wrong, I am still a glow/gas guy at heart, I just did not want to fight the inevitable. Once I flew one, I knew this was where everything was going. Your more than welcome to fly mine at NVCL in the fall if you like, I know you will like it.

Thanks for the nice words though

Rob,

Thanks, I just stole it from the tower catalog :) It does make the simple profile pop though.

Tim,

What was your finish technique. Iron on covering with airbrushed panel lines or is it a silkspan and dope finish?

Rob,

Ultracote with just a regular fine line sharpie pen and then I airbrushed a light film of weathering lacquer paint over the ink lines. Since there is no oil there is no worry about the ink lines rubbing off.

I then put a coat of spray on auto wax and that's it.

This is a very nice model. I like how you hid the electronics in the cowl.  #^

HI Tim,

That really turned out sweet!  I *might* get up the the NVCL meet in late September (if I can talk the wife in to going, or find someone else to ride with me! LOL!!)  Of course, I will have to get the OK from Mr. Tate for me to show up..... LL~

Bill,
Come on up to the NVCL contest on Sept. 25. Dick Houser and Scott Richlen run a great contest up there at the NVCL every year. The more contestants they have the better. They even let me come and fly up there.

That is just a beautiful profile!  I too would like to see more detailed pics of how you hid the electronics.  Steve

Hi John,

Well it's "Official" then, I got the OK from you. ;D  I am glad all my stupidity is behind me. (well almost, anyway! LOL!!) Just kidding, anyway, as I hope you know.

Just got to find a riding partner!  It will be good to see you , Willis, and the Norfolk gang, etc. again.

I wish y'all could find a way to get another contest going at Fentriss!  Those were ALWAYS good times!  (even when it was cold and gale force winds! LOL!)  Seriously, The Mike Garmon Memorial would work out great.

Thanks!
Bill
