I am optimistic that we will continue to see a mix of evolutionary & revolutionary developments.
My Dad built an electric OTS airplane back in the mid 1980's. It weighted 48 ounces ready to fly of that roughly 30 ozs were in the Nicad pack. It would give about 3 minutes "quality" time. Nicads gave way to nimhs, and now with have Lipos. Personally I am expecting we will be seeing another leap before much longer.
I bought my first ECL set-up not quite 6 years about. It included a 10C battery that cost nearly $100 and which had a maybe 50-cycle life (few made it that far) Today I cannot even buy a battery that crude. A similar capacity pack today is on the order of $20 with a 25C or 35C rating and a several hundred cycle expectancy. That is a lot of progress in 6 years.
There are a lot of smallish improvements being made all the time, as high costs stuff evolves into high quality stuff. I suspect that today's high $$$ packs will be garden variety within a couple of years, as processes, quality and costs all improve.
THESE are the worst of times - and it is going to keep getting better!
