Brent-
I used an "off brand" motor on my first electric C/L plane, the Oriental ARF.
I am using an "Exceed Rocket 3020-950kv" on 4S, with a KR timer, and now a Xoar 10-5E prop. I started with an APC 10x6, then APC 10x5, but the wooden Xoar is a lot lighter.
It works perfectly, and I would guess I have over 100 flights on it, so far.
I started with 2800's, and am now using 2100's since the returned juice averages 1650ma.
Good luck, I think it will be fine.
PS. An inexpensive 30A ESC should be fine, just make sure the BEC voltage is right for the KR timer. I think no more than 5.5v, but please check yourself on that. My average amp draw is 18A, so enough head room even in maneuvers, in my experience so far.
