Title: Inexpensive Motor - Waypoint E3020-14 988KV
Post by: Brent Williams on June 12, 2017, 03:20:49 PM
I just rolled the dice and bought a few of these motors on ebay.  A few notable e-guru guys whose opinions I respect told me it should compare similarly to the Arrowind/Emax 2820 in performance and quality.  These should be able to power anything from a Twister, most 35 sized classic ships of a reasonable weight, up to a (light) Pathfinder or Cardinal.

Waypoint motors were sold in Singapore branded as Hyperion.  Their origin seems to be Sunray Technologies in China who make many of the well known brand names like the Hacker and many, many others.

I made an offer of 10.00 and it was accepted.  So I bought 4...  With shipping it was only $50.59 for 4 motors.
So...we'll see how they perform on a plane.  I'm not expecting Cobra quality...it's a $10.00 motor afterall...

I am using Hyperion motors in my profile carrier plane. I've gone though 6 of them because of the lousy bearings in them. Why I have used so many motors is that the bearings spin in the case so that ends the motor. I tried glass bearings and nothing changed, 2 or 3 motor runs in competition and they were shot. Might be that the cases were machined wrong because the bearings seemed to be loose in the case even when new and not run yet. Now they no longer even make the motor that I used or I would still be buying them, very powerful motors (HP-HS3026-1400KV).

It's KV is 988.  My Cobra is KV 930 and I run it on 4 cells set to around 9K rpm.  Looking at the prop chart it only talks about 3 cell setup.  Are you going to use it on 3 or 4 cell setup?

I'm going to run it on a Thunder Power 2800-4s.

You do get what you pay for, not saying these won't be good motors but I have a Scorpion 3026 that I lawn darted about 3 inches into the ground on a RC plane, all I had to do was clean it and replace the front bearing, that was 5 years ago and the motor is still running flawless.

Hey Brent,
Have you flown one of these yet? I just ordered a couple to try out, one specifically for my Twister.

Thanks, Matt

No, I have not used the motors yet.  I slid on the collet and bolted on a prop to a motor and that's as far as I've made it.

I'm still acquiring parts and info.  (Mostly info now, as I've got most of the parts) I have 3 brands of motors (good, better, great) sitting on the bench to choose from in this size range (Cobra 2820, Eflite Power15, Waypoint 3020), Thunder Power 2800 4s batteries and a powerful PowerLab 8 charging system.

I'm stuck somewhere in mid-indecision regarding which E-system to use.  I'm torn between the KR Timer and the Hubin FM-9.  I was quite sure that I was going to use the KR, but I'm now leaning towards the FM-9.  Analysis paralysis has set in.

If you are in an area where others are flying electric it may be advantageous to use similar equipment especially timers.  That way you can get help instead of more questions.

If you are just getting into electric I would go for the KR.  Other than needing to solder a lead to one of the motor leads it is bullet proof.  If something is not right is shuts down elimination the dreaded smoke.  The only other deal is that if you have a fancy speed controller you need to make sure the break is off and the governing feature is off (some times called the helicopter mode).  Also what Fred said. y1

Brent-
I used an "off brand" motor on my first electric C/L plane, the Oriental ARF.
I am using an "Exceed Rocket 3020-950kv" on 4S, with a KR timer, and now a Xoar 10-5E prop. I started with an APC 10x6, then APC 10x5, but the wooden Xoar is a lot lighter.
It works perfectly, and I would guess I have over 100 flights on it, so far.
I started with 2800's, and am now using 2100's since the returned juice averages 1650ma.

Good luck, I think it will be fine.
PS. An inexpensive 30A ESC should be fine, just make sure the BEC voltage is right for the KR timer. I think no more than 5.5v, but please check yourself on that. My average amp draw is 18A, so enough head room even in maneuvers, in my experience so far.

R,
Chris

I just bought two of the el-cheap-o motors. I too paid 10.00 ea for two. Would you guys recommend locktite for the bearing before running it. Long time before running, my project is a scale ship over the winter.

I have been using the Exceed Rockets for several years now. I have not had a problem yet. They seem to be a cut above most of the cheaper motors. Good Luck with yours.
