Imitation Profile is Finished
« on: May 05, 2018, 05:52:22 PM »
Well, it's finally finished and flown.

I'm going to list all the details in "List your setup" later, but wanted to post a few pictures.

Very pleased with how it turned out, the kit was well thought out and put together.  Thanks to Mike Griffin and Eric Rule.

First flight, right off the building board was great, each little trimming procedure just made it better.  Can't wait to take it to the Joe Nall.

Regards

Vince

Vince this is a beautiful job and you did a great job of building and finishing.  I hope others who bought the kit will see this and it will inspire them to build theirs.  It should....thank you Vince.

Looks great!  How about a few more pictures either showing the build, or with the battery area open to show your conversion and electronic positions.  Any trouble getting a vertical CG balance?

Vincent that is beautiful. Love all of it except on thing that is not on you. The model screams for a cowl over the motor and perhaps a spinner. If it is tail heavy that would make perfect nose weight. Make a video with it in the air. I wish you many happy landings.

Thanks Fred.  Here's a couple of construction photos.  I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to efficiently mount all the electrical "stuff".  Actually built a mock up to get some ideas.  What I came up with was the best fit I could figure out.  It works pretty well.  The battery is sitting very close to the wing C/L.  I ended up opening up the battery compartment to fit all the pieces.  The Talon ESC is held in place with some 3M Dual Lock tape, as is the back side of the battery.  Everything is held tightly in place by the hatch, which is made of a plywood/balsa sandwich held in place with two 4-40 screws.

The wing was built using a wing jig from Eric at RSM.  It worked very well and allowed me to turn the wing over as I was building it.  I finally removed it from the jig when I had all the sheeting in place.

We are very early into the trimming process.  I started with 3/4 of an ounce of tip weight.  We increased that by 1/4 once, it's now 1 ounce total.  It was kind of turbulent on the day we were trying to trim it, I think the wings are now level, but I'd like to see it on a calm day to verify that.  We moved the leadouts a little bit forward, added some RPM to the motor and changed from 64 ft. lines (eyelet to eyelet) to 61 ft lines.  I don't have lap times yet.   I think my Cobra motor would like a 12 inch prop, but the clearance with the grass won't allow for a bigger prop.  I found a longer set of wire gear which I'm installing now for more ground clearance.  I'm going to stick with the 11 X 5.5 prop for now, take it to the Joe Nall CL stunt clinic and see what happens.

We did not add any nose or tail weight yet, but as I mentioned, we're only starting the trimming process.  It corners very well, and it seems very solid.

Thanks for your comments.

Thank you.  I believe Ted's original was designed that way to make it easy to swap out motors for experimentation purposes.  It does not seem to be tail heavy at all, I don't want to even add a spinner at this point.  I can tell you the motor runs nice and cool.  I'll see if I can talk my wife into taking a short video of it in the air.

Nice clean install.  You may need some compartment venting as the temperatures warm up, perhaps the slot will be enough.  Please keep posting as you fly.

Thanks Skip.  I've  used both makes over the years, but this is Ultracote.  It seems to do corners just a little bit better/easier.  I do like Monokote for it's beautiful luster however, nothing compares.

Thanks Fred.  You bring up a good point about heat in that battery compartment.  I'll have to keep an eye on it.  Didn't really give that much thought.  Ugh.  I think I can install some vents n the hatch cover without hurting the strength.  I can also vent the backside of the compartment.  I'll post after I get back from the Nall.

Looking at some of your pics, are the control surfaces laser cut built up or stick built?
I have always loved transparent finishes but hate when you have to patch. It’s always readily obvious. My trans red Twister got two patches before it’s first flight!

Hey Matt, all control surfaces are stick built.  Tedious work, but light and strong.  Flaps are 1/4" thick, non tapered.  Stab is 3/8" and elevators are 3/8" tapering to 1/4".

You are absolutely correct, transparent covering presents it's own unique set of problems, but it sure looks great on a built up surface.  I gave up on the fuselage, I just couldn't get the look that I wanted with all the overlaps and seams, very obvious.  My wife commented on how nice it looks in the air, flying through the sun.  I've used it on several of my RC planes over the years and always loved the appearance in the air.

Update:  Heat is not an issue.  Battery is luke warm after doing full pattern.

The initial flights have been very promising.   Added 1/4 oz of tip weight, total is now 1 oz.  Moved leadouts slightly forward from the initial position.  Bumped up RPM on motor twice, should now be around 9,700.  Switched from 64 ft. lines to 61 ft. lines.  It seems that the ideal length is somewhere in between those two lengths.  Lap times are in the 5.4 range.  Have not made any changes to the CG position, it seemed fine from the first flight.   Only using about 50% of my TP 5S 2800 battery, so there's lots of room for changes.  I have a 12 X 6 prop ready to install, want to see the difference from the 11 X 5.5 that's on there now.  We've just started trimming it, I hope to keep making it better and better.  Final weight, RTF is 50 ounces.

This is by far the best airplane I have ever flown.  It's much better than me, that's for sure.  Only have about 10 patterns on it so far, it's been raining for almost a week now.   Rounds are nice and round, square corners are so smooth, it's amazing.  I'd like a little more line tension, I think the bigger prop will give that to me.  First contest is late June, plenty of time to practice.

If you're looking for a fun profile to build and fly, I don't think you'd be disappointed at all with the Imitation.
