IC to "E" With a new look! Lots of New Photos!
« on: February 10, 2014, 08:35:05 AM »
IC to the Big "E" With a new look?

Absolutely!

Well, inspired by so many modelers, to many to list,   H^^  I decided to do something about my interest in Electrics.

The New American is no longer. No loss there, that's for sure.  LL~

Here's the first hour, just last night, of the "ripout!"  ;D

Rudder gone!

Rail mounts gone!

Firewall gone!

Tank floor tank hatch gone!

And whatever else is in the way. Gone!!

I never liked the looks of The New American anyway. Honestly.  n~

Weighed 30.5 oz. before the ripout. No gear, wheels, or elevator.

The model is the easy part, choosing the perfect setup is what I really have to concentrate on.

Larry,

Robert is like the Energiser Bunny.

I cannot compete with that.

He should have that Bunny decal on his rudder.

Someone mentioned battery packs that were about 105mm x 35mm x 35mm or there about. These were 2200 to 2500 packs.

I can't seem to find a pack that size?

I'm really limited with space.

Anyone know of battery packs this size, or smaller?

Thanks,

Charles

The Brodak 4Sx2200 packs are that size.

Also, go to the Hobby City site, they show a lot of different packs with different sizes, I think it was the Zippy Lite 4Sx2500 was that same generic size.  Not sure but I think the ThunderPower 4Sx2700's (older style) fit the bill.

Dennis,

Thanks for the reply.

I thought it was you that mentioned this, but wasn't sure. I just wrote down the measurements.

I haven't picked a motor yet, but the pack you mentioned, that 105mm is what I will use.

I was told not to purchase a battery pack until I was ready to use it?

Dennis, thanks again for the reply and info.

Motor choice is still in the works, but in the meantime, I did manage "to put a rudder on it!"

Sounds like "Beyonc'e" "Put a rudder on it!"  LL~

Not easy choosing a set-up, especially when you can't afford a mistake.

Needing a small sized battery pack doesn't help with motor choices. That 105mm that Dennis suggested is probably the choice.

Still would like to have a 2" spinner and an APC 12/6 pusher. Considering the Cobra 2820/14 or the 2820/12. Maybe.  n~

Here's the old rudder and the new rudder.

New rudder has an offset and is removable. Case you want to add more offset. Or take it away.

Beyonc'e net worth, 350 million.

Charles:
Another small word of caution, usually the pack dimensions are for just the pack, the wiring harness ANd soldering ears adds some length.  Depending on the install I allow about 4.5" (115mm) for a Brodak 4Sx2200 pack.

The pix you posted where your removed the beams; can you cut back the leading edge of the wing about 1" or so - then cap it off? That could score some extra room for the pack.

Dennis,

Good point, there's wires that I didn't consider. Thanks for that.

I'd be really nervous to cut that LE and box it. I believe I'll loose strength from cutting that LE, won't I?

If I built an electric model from scratch, I would take in consideration a second spar for that purpose. Probably recess back to the arm of the bellcrank, or as far as I could go, a spar to reach 3-4 ribs from center. I'm doing exactly this with that elliptical wing design.

I don't have much room in this stubby nose, I only have 7.5" from the LE to the prop thrust line.

Thanks for the reply

The motor has been ordered and I should have it in three days. Not much to do until I mount the firewall and the motor.

I did, however, remove the original bellcrank pushrod, a Dave brown/my megshift. Replaced it with a Tom Morris "ball and claw." Probably saved a gram.

Model weighs 32.3 oz., at the moment.
Motor weighs 4.94 oz.

Larry,

I can't get this thing done in 27 days.

I'll progress, but not finish the model.

It'll take 27 days for me to decide the scheme.

Edited for spelling.

Still waiting for the motor.

In the meantime, I decided to make the canopy. There has to be a canopy. I didn't have any blue or pink foam, so I decided to whittle a canopy out of wood.

"Because I can." A line from the movie "Seabiscuit." One of my all time favorites.

A bit daffy, the canopy lines on the Mig-3, but I like it. So I decided to use something similar on this model.

Of which BTW I have to come up with a new name for? The New American is out!

This canopy is a tad larger than the Mig-3's. It will get hollowed, I'll get it as thin as I can. It will be painted black.

I have no idea what a "Tweener" is.

Would you like a JPEG of the outline?

You could trace it on your monitor.

Maybe the canopy design will catch on.  ;D

And watch, someone else will get credit for the design.  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Here's the canopy hollowed.

Weighed 30 grams before removing any inside material.

Down to 11 grams now with some more material still to be removed. It's long, the back has to be trimmed some. Not sure where yet?

I'll get this thing X-Rayed to determine consistency in wall thickness.  ;D

The photo isn't my Tweener.  It is Sina's.   The one I am rebuilding is this plane's older brother.  It has a plastic canopy but the area needs some stiffening.  If I remove the wood floor and add a hollowed wood canopy the weight penalty will be negligible.

Chev,

I just cut my canopy back, removed .5" from the end, plus fine tuned the inside. It now weighs 9 grams. I'll shave a bit more.

I also removed material from the inside of the model.

Well, here I am making things even more difficult for myself.  n~

Removed all the balsa from the 1/16" ply doublers. Now that there will be a spinner, these doublers will get reshaped and some material removed, and , obviously, some added.

Bottom photo shows the motor mount drawn which I have to cut along with the plywood nose piece. A 2.25" spinner will be used, clockwise rotation.

No laser cutting here.

Moving along at a slow but steady pace.

If I knew more about electric model construction, I could move a bit faster.  n~

Construction is a bit different than that of IC models.

Got my mount cut and laminated, two pieces, 1/8" and 3/32. left and right sides will have somewhat of a flat. If I measured correctly.  n1

These pin-ups are made of clear transfer paper, I've had this tracing technique posted before. Not really creative, but the backs are sticky and they stay in place while drawing ink lines. Drew the formers in my not CAD program.  ;D

Hopefully, these will be the start of my nose formers.

I do have to add noches for the left and right rails. I'll have rails but not as beefy as IC rails, .25" x .5" is what I'll use. Keep the nose moment stiff.

Also, the top part of these formers have to become a hatch to get at the "E" gear. Gotta keep that in mind.

Stole this from a Bob Hunt photograph. Actually stole a bit more, thank you Bob Hunt!

Combination square in use getting the front balsa pieces in perfect alignment on the vertical. I'll have one degree offset.

If I'm doing something incorrect, don't be shy, just say so.  ???

I'm also removing bits of material from inside the model, trying to bring the weight down, gram by gram.

Not sure what the 29 days thing is about but if you think the canopy is light enough mine in that state usually weigh 2 to 3 grams.

Not sure what the 29 days thing is about but if you think the canopy is light enough mine in that state usually weigh 2 to 3 grams.

I'll get it lighter, but I bet it's longer than yours. LL~ LL~ LL~

Apples for apples, I just measured the canopy.

6"L x 2.25"W x 1.675"H

I will remove more material from the thickness and, I have to do a tapered trim on the bottom.

Bet I'll get it down to 6 grams.

More if I put a layer of silk on the thing, then I can remove material almost to the silk. Probably get another gram off of it.

Well, I picked up my 3mm allen head bolts today, four of them.

16mm long, for mounting the motor. I also picked up four more at 14mm in length. SS is all they had.

One of them will fit. The motor mount, front mounted, is 7/32" thick.

Debating as to putting in the mount or retro-fitting the wing mounted gear first.

Not looking forward to either one.

Conflicts, go figure

BTW. I need a name change for The New American, seeing it's not TNA anymore.

And I had such a great scheme for that model.

Even though my day is a busy one, I decided to work on the retro-fit wing mounted gear.

Especially now that Gerald Arana's retro-fit was fresh in my mind.

Jerry, thanks for those photos and your effort to help.

Jerry posted photos of his project, converting a "TF" Nobler to a "Brock" Nobler. A retro-fit for his wing mounted gear was one of his tasks.

You can see Jerry's photos at the "Retro-fit" gear Thread.

Obvious difference was I choose to mount my gear rail blocks against the spar.

Here are all my parts for the outboard wing. Inboard wing is the same except for lead out holes. I'll make some holes in these doublers to save a few grams.

No "T" bolts/blind nuts in the photo, becaus I didn't have any. I'll see if Home Depot has them?

This "nameless" model, nameless because it's no longer The New American, weighs 740 grams at the moment. Without the gear pictured parts.

If I had the building of this model to do over, I would have used 1/16" sheeting instead of 3/32". Could have had a substantial weight savings.

"I just love the look of wing mounted gear in the morning."  ;D

Chipping away at tasks.

Still on the gear rail blocks.

Jerry, here ya go, look farmiliar?

Nothing complicated and nothing that hasn't been done before, at least similar.

Generally the whole rib is a ply rib. I just added ply doublers.

I also added a .25" sq. stiffener to the 3/32" sheeting. Give the hard wood rail more material to glue against. The rail isn't glued, it needs blind nuts.

Aluminum tube accepts the 1/8" steel gear leg with no slop.

No blind nuts, so that's it till tomorrow.

After the gear the motor mount is next.

I found a set of .125" wire gear bent for another model. First time I took a 90 degree bend out before. The length was only 4.25" and I need at least 5" possibly 5.5". I'll bend that last 90 when I determine tire size and what I'll need for prop clearance.

As you can see, I opted for the invisible gear blocks, they weigh nothing.

Epoxied the motor mount, so that is now in place. There are no invisible motor mounts available that I know of.

I have good news and bad news. I'll get to that in a minute.

As you can see, my formers are in place but not glued, all snug as a bug in a rug. I have stuff to do, so they will be removed agan and again.

Not sure yet about the LE former because I have to fit a battery pack in that area, this former could be changed or eliminated?

At the moment, the model still remains nameless, but I have a few ideas.  "Bird of Pray," " The Predator," just to name a few which could work.

OK!

The good news is, I will continue working on this model as often as I can. And I expect to finish it.

My first big "E" model, so there are challanges, plus, extra work considering it's a retro-fit from an IC model designed as The New American. So, goodbye to the New American.

The bad news.

The bad news is, I may go "Klingon Cloaking Device." In Klingon Cloaking Mode there will be no more photos. Text only and probably not much of it.

Photo taking and placement does take a bit of time and I could be using that valuable time to work on the model. Time management.

It seems there's not a great deal of interest in the Thread, so Klingon Cloaking Mode is likely. Cloaking may or my not be engaged. We'll see.

Larry,

Thanks so much for the reply. What a surprise!  #^

I did fit the battery. I can get it in there at a 45 degree angle sitting on the LE, half of the battery above the wing CL and the other half below the wing CL.

When I drew the design change for electric, I planned for the battery to fit this way, so I got that covered.

My battery choice is the Hyperion 4S/14.8V  25C  2500mAh. It's the smallest one I could find.

How much room will I need for those other items, I have absolutely no idea?

Wish I had sheeted the wing with 1/16" balsa, but at the time, I thought I was taking/getting good advice. Maybe so?

Model weighs 662 grams, as of today.

Still have sheeting on the fuselage, some above and some below.

I expect to trim a few more grams off the canopy. In fact, I have to remove a portion of the bottom of it. The canopy started out as a plug actually. I was going to pull one but changed my mind. I don't want to mess around with a clear canopy.

I just remounted the motor and glued cut blocks around the spinner area. A bit more weight.

I need one more former then I can sheet the fuselage top and bottom.

Thanks again for your reply.

I really think before you commit to the fuse shape you should test fit the other components,, ( to do this you will need them in hand, I promise that relying on a drawing is a mistake) the connectors, plugs and wire are a real issue.
if you play now, you have the option to revise the fuse shape

Mark,

Thanks for that heads up and your reply.

You are 100% correct, I should have the items on hand.

I haven't decided on what to use as far as product brand, I'm still researching, looking for small items.

I have looked at a bunch of setups. You don't get measurements in photos, but one can realize a fuselage ID width of 2" to 2.125", + or -.

I have trunk space and the hatch lid is a dome. These things are on wires, so I'm thinking, left right, forward backwards, and over under.

I'm hoping I'm OK.

I'm not sure if the wiring can be shortened? That could create room.

Nice hearing from you Mark, and thanks for the reply.

Chev,

Thanks for the reply.

About making wires shorter. I thought with some applications, or Brands, this was a no no. Had something to do with voltage going to the motor? I think?

I do see all the ends are available as is plugs.

I cannot believe how far I've gone with this model in just the last day. When the balsa flies and the tools collect, you know you're in the zone!

The Twilight Zone.   n~

Most of the fuselage sheeting is completed, as is the nose and spinner area. I do have my "T" nuts so the gear rails are now going to happen.

Here's a couple of photos of the models progress.

Unfortunately, as you can see, or I should say not see, the model is still in Klingon Cloaking Mode.

Well, I took the model out of Klingon Cloaking Mode just long enough to take a shot of the grill opening.

This should suck enough air.

Still in Klingon Cloke Mode so there's no reason for a photo.

But, I did trim 3 grams off the canopy.

Might get a photo later.

I disengaged the Klingon Cloaking Mode just long enough to get these two shots of the canopy.

I certainly spent a great deal of time designing the Mig-3 canopy. I wanted a really different look and more importantly, I didn't want the canopy to look like a shelf canopy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Anyway, I mentioned I would use the same canopy design on this nameless model. And I did.

Yea it was a plug and I was lazy. Pahutie! I spit on clear canopies, well, just my own.  ;D

Extra work I don't need at the moment. 8 grams now glued in place.

Not sure if this ship will stay together going in and out of Klingon Cloaking Mode? I should choose and stay there.

Well Mark,

How right you were.

I drew the thing out a half a dozen times. Didn't have the actual battery but had accurate measurements.

Oops! Now I have the battery and it did not fit as I intended or as I drew it on my plans. I was hoping for a battery "sit" at 45 degrees over the LE and no matter how many times I tried it, I couldn't get the thing to sit that way. I had no plan "B" but I made one up.

Formers? Who needs formers. n~

Now the battery sits low in the bilge with 50% of it behind the LE.

Also looks like I'll have room for other on-board items.

Lesson to be learned, have ALL the components "before" you design the model. Next Time.

It is amazing how some modelers can keep the hatch area so nice and neat during construction.

I didn't build mine in during construction, with the retro Mig-3 or this retro no name, I cut it in afterwards. Probably creating more work for myself I'm sure.

My next electric, which I'll build from scratch, will most likely have the hatch area designed in during the construction. I also expect to have an area with ample room close to the LE.

And I will deffinately have each and every component before I do the final draft of the plans.

The framing of the new fuselage and the conversion from IC to electric is completed.

I'm actually starting the finish, so I moved the Thread to "Paint and Finishing."

Well, here's the under side of the hatch for that one interested individual.  LL~ LL~ LL~

Tabs prevent left and right movement. Skewers cut to size fit under the front wood of the nose. I love skewers.

Couple of magnets, eventually, will be added in the rear and the rear will be pinned, somehow..

I'll remove at least a half or a gram from the underside eventually.

Dennis,

Thanks for the reply.

I should have my magnets any day now. Can't really fine shape that area unless the hatch is held in place. I will check out Hobby City's spring latch.

Nothing wrong with suspenders and a belt.

Thanks again for the reply.

While I was waiting on information to tackle the magnet thing, I decided to fit the elevator.

Interesting. Photos of Builds, mine anyway, don't tell the whole story.

Sometimes photos can be misleading. In that, they can make tasks look a great deal less taxing than they really are.

Well, I can tell you this, I work hard at everything I do. I'll admit it, and little comes easy.

Removing/replacing, sometimes a dozen times to get something right.

Sometimes all wrong, "do it again."

Frustration? I feel that sometimes.

Eventually it comes together.

"Never give up, never surrender!" Name the movie.

Elevator update. Fitted but not permanately in place.

I still have to drill the two brass keepers attached to the control horn wire. They will get pinned with a skewer. Love them skewers.

Adjustible elevator horn from Tom Morris.

Hi Charles:

The color of the spinner is not a problem; simply paint it the color you desire. The attached photo depicts my 2012 Crossfire Extreme fitted with an E-Flite 1 3/4-inch diameter spinner. It came through in natural aluminum color. I scuffed up the surface with some #320 grit sandpaper, primed it with an etching primer (in this case, ACID #8 by U-Pol), painted it white to match the plane and give it the same base color on which to apply the trim color (in this case, red), applied the trim color and then sealed it with a clear top coat. Simple. I've been painting spinners in this manner (using various products) for about 40 years...

Bob,

What a surprise.

Thanks for that photo of your great design, the Crossfire. Crossfire EX!

You know I'm not one to fratenize, that's for sure, but I gotta tell ya, I love your Crossfire design. Every time I see a photo of that design, I start thinking about stunt. Not enough to build a Crossfire yet, but if I migrate to that kind of equipment, it will be your Crossfire for sure!
Thanks for the reply and that nice photo.

Well, with the spinner now in hand, I should say fitted to the model, I finished the fine tuning around the nose area.

Last bit of silk on the nose and a portion of the hatch.

Silk is almost all done.

One small other area left to silk, two actually, the gear rails.

Those areas of silk at the nose have been trimmed and given a few more coats of clear.

Gear rails were sanded flush. Black line is just a black line, not a space. The rail has been silked. Primed & sanded and you won't even see them.

Oh........my gosh!

My gear wire is chubby with Robart struts. Held in place by gravity just for a quick fit.

Mark,

I thought I had because I "checked" USA Warehouse, or location. One or the other.

I purched collets once from them and wheels, took only two weeks for that.

Mark,

You did some really nice woodwork on your Impact. Nice.

Glenn,

Hey! Hey!

Yes, I ordered the spinner red for a reason. It's all planned out.  ;D

I'll have primer on the thing this weekend.

I have to be careful. I weighed it with all the goodies. 54 onces it came in at. And that's no lie. 54 onces exactly.

That's with the motor, battery, spinner, collet, wire gear with struts, wheels and all control surfaces. No prop or tail wheel. No gear doors either. No primer no paint no clear.

52" in span powered by a Cobra 2820/14.

Glenn, thanks for the reply.

That model isn't all that far from paint.

For those that don't know, The ARGO started out as The New American. A take off of the All American. Power was to be an OS LA .46.

However, I changed the model over to the big "E," as per this Thread.

Today, I just added a bit of micro-balloons to the rudder area. OH! I also glued the rudder in place. It was originally designed for a removable rudder.

I pulled two canopies for the Mig-3. Thought I'd use the left over and add a clear canopy to the ARGO. Get this. I carefully removed the balsa canopy and it weighed much less than the clear one.

Sooooooooo, I put the balsa one back on. Good thing I removed it carefully.

I actually added this small radius of fill on the rudder because of the color scheme. There was an tight edge before. Also, I did away with that red spinner for an aluminum one that will get painted.

Possibly a few more future photo updates.

Another task completed.

That's not gray primer sprayed over the micro-balloons, it's putty applied with a finger.

Got a bit more done today between walking the dog and getting my mail. Closed up that vent intake for a cleaner look.

I'm waiting on magnets from Tom Morris.

Seeing I had to walk the wife's dog at 3:00 this morning, I decided to do a bit on the ARGO.

Soldered the tail wheel in place. Put a washer on both sides.

Snip the end with a dremel makes it clean and neat. Could polish the solder? Nah!

Thought I'd Post as I progressed. Trying today to catch up on the work which has to be done on the ARGO.

I got those Tom Morris magnets in the mail yesterday and put them to good use. I have no idea how many magnets other modelers use, or if they even use any, but I use at least four. Two on two. Or each magnet against another magnet.

Probably overkill.

I wouldn't have the confidence to use a magnet up against a screw head.

Although I do remember someone telling me they did it this way for the screw adjustment.

I struggle with my adjustment because there isn't any.  n~

I bounced around between different tasks. Photos are pretty much self explanatory.

"Well, possibly not."

A line from the movie Transporter.

Had to shave a tad of off the flap ends so they would work freely. Speaking of shaving, I removed 3/4" off the trailing edge of the elevator. Thing was too wide to begin with. Looks better now and less weight.

Applied a bit of "Deft Brushing Lacquer" on the exposed balsa, flap ends and the elevator TE.

I recommend products I use and have experience with.  ;D

Gotta get some hinges in those flaps. That will be next.

I just love the smell of fresh Epoxy in the mornings.

Wax paper tucked in so the hatch doesn't get glued, only the balsa base for the two Tom Morris magnets gets glued.

Scoop area scratched up a bit.

Oiled the hinge pins AND 90 degreed them. If you used these KLETT hinges you know what I'm talking about.

I'll use my old stash before I use the hinges I purchased from Bob Reeves. Nice of Bob to give up those great KLETT hinges

Thank you Bob.  H^^

Shifted gears a bit and went to town on the elevator. Remember I trimmed .75" off of it.

Two coats of the DEFT and I hit the edge with primer. Did all this while the flap hinges were baking in Epoxy. One side only. I do a side at a time.

I once did all my hinges with 5 minute Epoxy, but I'm older now and I can relax using the longer 20 minute cure. You would have to be quick with the 5 minute Epoxy. You lose a minute or better just mixing.

Early start on the ARGO this morning.

A bit of a snag. Not something that requires setting your hair on fire, but an issue that needs to be addressed and fixed. Or not depending on how fussy one may be?

I didn't notice the slight shift in the flap when it was finally placed in the TE of the wing and Epoxied.

A 1/16 of an inch gap that should be 1/32.  Soooooooo, I did the fix. As I'm typing this, the Epoxy on the hinges of my flap is curing.

Sure, I could have used heat on four hinges and probably slid the flap that 1/32". Probably.

There will be no other form of glue except Epoxy, just in case I have to repair or remove the flaps with heat. Same for the elevator.

Tad of finger applied putty that will be addressed a bit later. Now onto the elevator hinges.

Moving right along as they say.

Flaps Epoxied in place, done!!

Hinges Epoxied onto the Elevator side. I usually do the stab first.

I'll get that elevator on in a short while.

I rather dislike hinging too.  The whole works is a pain.  I am glad it is usually a "do the job and done" process that I don't have to come back to later.

I prefer stitching my hinges, but that looks bad on larger models.

Phil,

I've seen really great looking stitching on models. Photos Posted in this Forum.

Nothing wrong with stiching!

Thanks for the reply.

Here's this mornings efforts.

Threw on a dust coat of white primer, just enough to cover. Added 68 grams. Much of which will be removed.

Looks nice white.

Just purchased two of the Rust-o-leum aerosol cans for the ARGO. Same color just in case I need the second can.

Yup! I believe Rust-o-leum may be a "step up' from my normal Krylon brand.

Even with my extensive background finishing models with automobile base colors and clear coats, I'm electing to move forward and STILL use rattle cans!

I must be crazy.

However, many modelers have had great results using only aerosol cans on their models.

They made a beliver out of me.

Here's my last two models finished exclusively with aerosol cans.

Yup, had to walk my wife's dog, Indy, 5:30 this morning. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Anyway, thought I'd bring this Thread up to date.

I never used the Rust-o-leum. Couldn't bring myself to it because of all the success I had with Krylon.

Krylon dries quick and sticks well, plus I paint OUTSIDE! So I need a fast dry paint that sands well with 600 or 1000.

I finally finished the ARGO! "IC to E," then back to "IC" again. WHAT! Bet that's never been done before.

The completed ARGO, tank and all weighs the same as my Pathfinder ARF at 55 onces, and change. The Pathfinder is a tad larger model. I hope the ARGO performs fairly well, time will tell. Balances right on the money without adding any weight.

I won't be able to fly the ARGO until I brake in the NIB engine. OS LA .46.

I also have to find a non grass area for the flights or a better field than the one we use.

Currently in the makings is the ARGO II.

I'm sure I can build the ARGO II, much lighter.

The ARGO II will look just about the same in appearance but will have some structual changes.

A different airfoil and possibly a sheeted built up wing for starters. I'm looking in to that.

Well, The ARGO story comes to an end, finally. Here's the finished product of my efforts.

I hope the ARGO is well recieved.

Charles.

What a great thread.  I really enjoyed it.  However, I'm confused.  You went from IC to E and back to IC, why?  The plane and paint scheme look great.  What kind of clear do you put over the Krylon?  I believe Krylon isn't fuel proof while Rustoleum is.  What material did you use to cover the wing and tail?

What a great thread.  I really enjoyed it.  However, I'm confused.  You went from IC to E and back to IC, why?  The plane and paint scheme look great.  What kind of clear do you put over the Krylon?  I believe Krylon isn't fuel proof while Rustoleum is.  What material did you use to cover the wing and tail?

Peter,

Clever guy. You're the only one who noticed that change back to IC. Kudos for that.

Everything I have in modeling, past and present, has been IC. Well, except when I did rubber bands as a kid.  LL~

I have nothing against anyone who does the big "E," but at this time it's not for me.

I almost started to design a scheme for the ARGO when the "E" motor was still in place. Handling it after so long is what changed my mind.

So, I just went ahead and made the changes.

There will be an ARGO II.

I use Krylon. So far on three models and clear with 2K Spray Max.

The 2K Spray Max is the protection, not what is under it.

Thanks for the king reply.

Hi Charles,

I'm surprised I am the only one who noticed.  I'm still curious about what material you used on the wing and tail.

Why do you favor Krylon over Rustoleum?  You mentioned drying time, is there any other reason?  I've used Rustoleum on a number of planes with good luck and never needed to put on added weight with a coat of clear.  What is 2K Clear Max.  Does it come in a spray can and where do you get it?

Pete,

I think the word is out now on the "IC to "E" back to "IC."  LL~

The tail surface and wing are silk covered. There's a Thread, the "New American." It's basically the build thread for what became the ARGO.

I go back a long ways with Krylon. Sign guys used Krylon for their paper signs, as I did.

I almost used Rust-o-leum on the ARGO but couldn't bring myself to it.

"Never change a winning game." Bill Tildon, 1927.

I know there's a weight gain with added clear, but I really don't care. I'll never enter a stunt contest where it would make any difference.

And the kind of flying I do, it really doesn't matter.  LL~

I like scale. Scale guys always build heavy, so I'll fit right in.

Thanks for the kind reply.

In addition to being a great builder you are also a very good lyricist.  I enjoyed your version of Waltzing Matilda in the New American thread.

Wow! What a story of IC to E and back, yet the plane is beautiful in its appearance and finish.  H^^

CL-flyer,

Thank you for the kind words. If you have the interest, there's more photos and comments at this thread. Maybe, links never work right.

BTW. I'm getting ready to paint the ARGO 2, a knockoff of the ARGO.

Thanks for the reply.
