Power supply?
« on: November 03, 2013, 05:56:52 PM »
My charger is rated for 11-18v 4+A

So will this allow me to use 6.5 amps?

This i have a question about using a car type battery. Is 12v but the battery might be 750 cranking amps. Do I need something else to setup for field charging?

I want to learn this stuff.

What charger do you have? For field charging it depends on a number of factors. Do you have electricity  available? How many batteries do you have or want to have? I have 7 my son, Kevin has 6 so we have no need to charge at the field. If you are only looking for an extra 3-5 charges a car battery should be fine. The actual number of field recharges will depend on the size of the batteries. The speed that you can charge is also a factor. I can charge 4 batteries in 11-13 minutes providing I have enough power available to run my chargers at full speed using 2 chargers. At my field I would need a  portable generator to run my power supply to produce that kind of power. I could never go that fast off a car battery.
By the way your biggest limiting factor with most chargers is the max # of watts they put out, NOT the # of amps the manufacture claims they can put out!

Currently I'm using a 750w computer power supply modified to run contuously. It'll happily charge 4 4s 5800 packs at 1c.

I've used deep cycle and normal car batteries for field charging, but deep cycle batteries are finnicky and can cause problems later in their life.

The car battery is good for maybe one charge of the 4 x 4s packs, but after that it's depleted.

A lot of guys who are flying electric F3A have bought honda (or equivalent) sine wave generators and are charging using these.

Thanks guys for this input.

My current power supply is 1.75amps 40w

It take almost 2hours to charge one 4s battery!

I think i need a bigger power supply.

What charger do you have? A more powerful power supply isn't going to help you if you don't have a charger to utilize the available power of the power supply. The power supply you have now defiantly wont provide enough power to charge your batteries at any sort of quick rate. I use a 24v 55 amp 1600 watt power supply. If I need 12 volts I have a 12volt tap that I can use on that Power Supply.

Yes you do!!! there is No Way you can utilize the power your charger has available with your current PS. You should be charging in 30 min or less with your charger. Your best bet is a server power supply so you can grow with it. There are many threads on RcGroups on making your own or you can still get one from me for the going rate on the rc boards. They are fairly easy to make up if you can solder and follow instruction's.

This is my favorite one. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1581061&highlight=dps+600pb These are generally available all over E bay or from multiple places on the net if you don't like e-bay. One of these will power at least  4 of your chargers at full power.

Here is another link that handles different types of pwr supplies: http://www.buddyrc.com/power-supply.html                                                    Now you have lots of options, including building your own.   :)

Here's where I got my power supply at Will's recommendation: http://www.serversupply.com/ .  I got a pair of power supplies he recommended earlier at $30 each including rapid shipping.  Will's current favorite DPS-600PB runs you $23 there.  Eschew the parallel hookup and use the 12V output from one of these, and you're ready for Teddy.

No offense to the builder but that does look a little OTT. I think if i was going to to go that far I'd probably just go for the montorous 1700w power supply from Revolectrix, and get the case while I'm at it so it, and my powerlab can look all proffesional like.

That setup looks like it needs a flux capacitor, and gets plugged into the DeLorean!

Howard,
The DPS-600PB became my favorite because shipping costs have gotten ridiculous and I can flat rate those so it saves people shipping costs. I am still using the ESP114 for most of my charging needs. I do keep a DPS600PB as my back-up.

I'm in the market for a couple of little ones for travel.

I see the ESP114 is now $15 at Server Supply.

Well guys i broke down a ordered one from a hobby store.

I have a few laptop chargers. One is was .5 volts too much for my charger. I pulled a old power supply out of a old computer. Can't find the safety circuit.
I have one charger and just got two more batteries.  The last thing i need is to short circuit my charger. I have already killed a brand new battery trying to learn this stuff. I want to fly my new electric setup so bad. I don't want to screw up what little gear i have.

I am sure we have a ton of DL380 power supplies at work and tomorrow i will go digging HP 380s is all we order.

I might try and have a backup pwr supply.   ;D

Thanks guys for all your input.

http://web2.murraystate.edu/andy.batts/ps/POWERSUPPLY.HTM

I followed these instructions.  I put in all the lead outs like the instructions state because I was needing the supply for some proto-board work.  You can omit quite a few of the lead outs and have a much cleaner setup if you only intend to use the +12V line. (However if your hobbies have some variety you may want to have the added options. )

I put some self-adhesive rubber feet on the bottom so it won't scratch any surfaces.  It also helps with cooling as my PSU has vents on the bottom too.
