I'm convinced ---Electric is the way to go for control line
« on: December 11, 2009, 01:48:41 PM »
Hi everybody,

This is the first time I have posted to this site, but I have been reading most of the posts regarding IC to Electric conversions. My friend, Willie DeMauro, asked me to fly his 2 conversion planes (P-40 and Banshee). After doing that and reading all the pros on this site, I decided to convert my 3 profiles.  Below are pictures of 2 completed. Both are scratch built using template of ribs from "Stiletto" wing reduced to 50". Both are covered completely with monokote.  I've noticed that people describe their setups so I will do the same in case anyone is interested.

"ILLUSION" - Turnigy C4240-900 motor, Will Hubin FM7 timer, Castle 40 ESC, 3200 MAH LIPO, Hobby City clone version of APC 12/6 prop.

I finished this plane yesterday and waiting for good weather to test.

"ORBIT"  -  Turnigy C3548-900 motor, Will Hubin FM7 timer, Castle 35 ESC, APC 12/6 prop cut to 11 1/2".

I have approximately 10 flights and very happy with the results. It flies through the whole pattern without any problems.

Thanks, and I hope everybody has a great holiday season.

Ron

It's hard to beat the power delivery, cleanliness and quietness of electric!

I've been flying primarily electric since 1992 - Yes even control line - I love them

Ron,

Welcome to ECL.  Glad to hear of your success and wish you more in the future.  Great job on your conversions.  Great and well matched components for them as well.  I really thought the 42-42-900 was a great motor choice for say anything from 575-625 sq in and say up to 54 ounces.  Wait until you try a pusher prop.  It will blow your mind.

Take Care!!

Hey Archie - What are the benefits of the pusher prop? The rotation change?

Added line tension over 45 deg.  No more holding your breath on the 3rd loop of the clover and no loss of tension in the verticals or hourglass.  The difference is so huge, it will blow your mind.  I am not terribly sure on the aero on this, but from first hand experience in flying 4 different birds with both direction props, the difference is very noticeable.

The pathfinder that Uncle Dennis converted took off with the outboard tip up at least 12in. The Strega and even the Mythbuster suffer from this.  Even the Oriental we had did it.

Ron,
The pics look great!!. Glad to see your finally posting. I see you painted the tips on that prop and look forward to seeing Illusion fly and grabbing a flight on it myself. I can personally vouch that the Orbit is an excellent flyer as I've not only seen it fly but have flown it though a pattern without any complaints. When we get a chance we will be trying some pusher props on these.

Hi Warren,

I was amazed myself. The best thing about it is that you do not have any over or under runs. The runs are constant which means you can concentrate on your flying and not worry about the engine cutting out of dirt getting into the venturi causing lean runs. No frustration in getting the engine started. Just have someone push the button and your off (pun intended).

I was about to give up CL flying, which I have doing since 1975, and concentrate only on my RC electric park flyers, but now it's a brand new ball game.

The best thing to do is see if you can fly someone's electric just to get the feel of it. Even if you only go around in a circle you will see the difference, and then you will have to force yourself into not stunting it.

Then you will be convinced. Just make sure when you first set up an electric, do it with someone who knows what electronics to use and how to set them up. Willie DeMauro is my mentor and best friend.

Ron

Warren, I misunderstood your message. You were referring to trying a pusher prop.
Willie has already used one and saw the difference right away. Everything they say about them is true.

Hi Ron,

Great looking models. One problem though.......with the "tank" angled like that on the Illusion. the motor will run rich upright and lean inverted   LL~........Just kidding!

Maybe we could send Big Art down to turn the needle valve body too with his magic box wrenches.

Hi Keith,

The reason I put the "tank" that way is to keep the electrons confused. They don't know whether to run uphill or downhill, and by them running back and forth, how do you think the motor turns.

Hi Dennis,

As I said on my thread, I am new to this forum and I haven't learned all the short cut lingo. I know what WTG stands for but would you please tell me what birs is short for?

Ron,
I believe birs is just a a misspelling for birds. I hope Dennis doesn't mind me correcting him. Worse yet I hope I'm not wrong.
