Disassembled Outrunner
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:22:10 AM »
Just took this motor apart, and it occurred to me that there might be interest in seeing what's on the inside of a typical outrunner. The motor has a noisy bearing, probably resulting from a cartwheeled landing.

This is a Rimfire 35-48-100kV. It has a duplex pair of bearings (two bearings mounted back to back) on the prop end and a single bearing on the stator end.

Disassembly is fairly easy:

Loosen the set screw that locks the safety collar, and slide it off the shaft.

Remove the snap ring and shims.

Slide the magnet bell off the stator. I clamped the prop shaft gently in my bench vise and used a pair of pliers to grip one of the mount screws on the stator end. You could also grip it by the firewall mount. It shouldn't take much effort to slide the magnet bell off, if it seems to  require force, stop and figure out why. Do NOT pull on the wires.

I still have to figure out a safe method for removing the bearings. Perhaps someone who has done this can advise.

Replacement bearings are available - for example:
http://www.vxb.com/

The hard part is how to get the old ones out. One possible method is to make a small rectangular plate with one narrow and one wide side. With the right dimensions the Plate can be tilted and inserted in the housing. Then use a punch to push the plate and the bearings out. It can be quite difficult. If the housing is aluminum, heating it may help.

Thanks, Jim. That's a good link. The bearings are fortunately a common size, 10mm OD, 5mm ID, and 4 mm wide.

I stood the stator on end on my Monokote sealing iron, which warmed up the aluminum case enough to tap the bearings out with a pin punch. Used an oven mitt to hold the stator while tapping, tapping, tapping at my workshop door. Quoth the bearings, "nevermore."

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.   :##

Try this place for bearing too.
