How much salt in the water??
« on: September 12, 2013, 06:23:10 PM »
Thus the question, just how much salt in a bucket, one gallon, of water to soak a very swollen LiPo battery?  I had the wife buy a 1.4 pound can of Morton's salt . I poured one  pound of the salt into the bucket. Dumped the battery and now it sits forlorn and under water in the back yard.  This is the same battery that was in the profile that caught fire in the air. A small portion of the plastic wrap melted, but nothing extreme, and the battery has made about 10 or 12 flights. But today it barely fit into the battery "box" on my Profile Cavalier, so I decided to dump it.
How long in the water and does actually do anything if the battery has not been "opened" by cuts, etc and can it then be tossed in with regular trash?? D>K

Ty,
I drowned a lipo with salt water once so I am qualified to give a answer. First I peeled off the outer plastic wrap exposing 4 silver battery cells.I then used a handful of salt in about a 1/2 gallon of water and let the cells sit in the solution for a whole day. I noticed after a few hours the battery started to throw off bubbles. The next day the water was brown and the cells were soggy with salt water. I pitched them in the trash. That's about as accurate as I can describe.

I just Googled "disposal of lipo batteries" and came up with this from our friends at Thunderpower

Just once I want to try the disposal method that involves a bit of duct tape, a fence post, and a small-bore rifle.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

According to What I've read on the RC Forum, saltwater is not the best way to dispose of a lipo and is also considered ineffective. They claim the best way is to make a discharger out of an automotive bulb (back up works well). Just add a connector to a standard socket and plug it in. I put my batteries on a concrete slab behind my house away from everything and in 24 hours it is at zero voltage and harmless. Then I just put it out with the regular trash.

I vote for seeing what a .45 ACP will do to the offending battery.  Or, bring it to Huntersville and we can toast it behind the tailpipe of Banjock's jet.

I found the safest and best way to make a lipo safe is;

1st. Fully charge the battery.

2nd. Place battery (on its side) on a cement surface well away from flamable material.

3rd. Belt lipo with axe, making sure not to cut it completely in half.

4th. Watch and enjoy the fireworks.

Make sure you see all the cells flare up. If you don't, belt it again!!  LL~

Great fun!!!!

When all this Lipo stuff started, I thought I read some where that it's best to treat it like a vampire by driving a wooden spike through it first, then soak in salt water. I haven't had any experience with this yet though, but it makes sense to expose the contents of the cells so the salt water can work better and faster. Just don't use a nail!!

Dan,
DONT PUNCTURE IT EVEN WITH A WOODEN STICK!!!!!! There must be 100 threads on RcGroups on how to properly dispose of a lipo. I do the light bulb method, outside away from everything till its DEAD  DEAD  DEAD!!!!
