Hacker 30XL10 bearing failure
« on: January 23, 2012, 03:29:22 PM »
Guys,
I just had the bearings on my Hacker 30XL10 fail after around 20 flights. The motor is front mount on a 3/16" firewall with an external rear bearing. Turning the motor over it is very smooth so it doesn't seem like the rear bearing caused any problem. Anyone else have bear failures with motors in a short number of flights? Besides just some weak bearing any thoughts on other causes?

Best,    DennisT

Dennis, can you tell us a bit more about your setup,, size prop, size plane, batteries, speed control timer, ect,

you say the bearing failed but that it turns smoothly? not sure I follow how that works,, I am curious since I am using Hacker A30-10XL on my new plane
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Mark,
By failed, I mean that the bearing has front to back movement (about 0.008"). The setup is a Hacker 30 XL10 - running a 11.75x5 APCE -P, CC45 ESC - fixed rpm set for 9200 rpm, Ztron timer - set for 100% rpm in all three steps, 4S1P 3900 mah TP ProLite. The ship is a modified Tutor II - 62" span, 60oz ready to fly, 64' C to C.

I have three of the A30 10XL motors with the extended rear shaft that RSM sells.  The one in the Naughty  Girls has over fifty flights with no bearing problems that I can see.  I have the rear extending part of the motor shaft set in an external bearing mounted behind the firewall.  I have a governor setup with a APC 12x6.5 WEP I got from Dennis Adamisin on the motors running 7850 RPM in level flight and peaking somewhere near 8150 RPM in climbs and overheads.

I wonder if you are seeing what I have seen on a few motors including the Hacker A30 10XL where the motor seems tight after flying, but the next day everything is great.  I check my batteries after every flight and there does not seem to be any unusual battery usage or variation in battey usage.  I see this on my small Aerowind motor as well but not on the Turnigy motor.  I have talked to Dennis Adamisin about it and he has suggested it might be the ESC putting  a load on the motor's back EMF.  But none of this seems to be related to bearings, although anything is possible.   The bearings seem smooth and I have not noticed any unusual or excessive endplay.

Hi Dennis,
8-MILs of end play ...
Does it make ugly noises?
Does it get hot?
Maybe it isn't really a failure ... I do expect the endplay to lessen when the motor is hot, if it ain't makin' noise or gettin' unduly warm, then don't fix it.

Let me know how it works out,

After reading the following thread, I oil all my motor bearings. Cheap insurance!

Hmm I need to pull my Hacker out and measure the end play..
Is it possible that the shaft is not seated against the c clip and this is allowing the bells to move relative to each other?

As long as there's no unauthorized contact between the rotating parts and the non-rotating parts, as long as the rotating parts aren't flying out of the airplane, and as long as you're not seeing any vibration, screeching, red-hot bearings, or other untoward circumstances, does it matter?

As a sign that something might be giving way, 8 mils of play is a concern.  But in and of itself I'm not so sure it's a bad thing.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I had exactly the same problem with a smaller Arrowind motor and it did turn out to be the "C" clip not being seated in the grove.  When I tried to reseat the "C" clip it snapped in half.  I took the shaft and scuffed it up and soldered a washer on it Seems to work great now, but this is a small motor so the solder seems to be holding.

Andrew,
I have found a source for C clips if you need them in the future.  http://www.lowpricerc.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=E-ring&x=0&y=0
