Cheapest speed controler for FM-2SR timer?
« on: September 08, 2016, 08:55:17 PM »
I bought a used Brodak Smoothie at a swap meet that had been converted to electric a few months ago for $60.  The plane included a 35-48 900KV motor and a FM-2SR timer.  Since the whole plane/motor/prop only cost me $60, I can't see spending $100+ for a speed controller to go in it.  If I can't find an ESC that doesn't cost a lot, I'll just buy another KR timer and use one of the speed controllers I already have.  But, I'd like to give the Hubin timer a try.  Any suggestions?

Since you saved so much on the plane why don't you buy a good Castle Ice edge esc and have a problem free system.

First of all I agree with what MM says and don't forget to buy a castle link (If you buy it new it comes with a coupon for a FREE castle link) so that you can program the controller for Control line use,Which is very very simple to do!!. If you still don't want to spend the money look on the RC for sale boards as used and also NIP come up often for bargain prices, but the sell very fast so you cant hesitate when you see one. I've seen Edge lite 50's sell for as little as $35 and castle links sell for as little as $10 brand new. BY the way, Castle speed controllers also work very well with KR timers so, its money well spent no matter what.

The FM-2SR timer is designed to work ONLY with the Castle ESC's (Phoenix, ICE & Edge models) and ONLY in the Set RPM mode.  The Set RPM mode requires that you program the ESC with your target RPM (far easier than it sounds). The prize (per Castle's analysis) is that Set RPM delivers the tightest RPM governing achievable.  Set RPM actually lets you program three different RPMS - I usually program the middle RPM setting as the main one, with the higher and lower programmed settings plus or minus 100 RPM mversus the main (mid) setting.

Okay.  I bought an ICE Lite for it for $45.  I already have a Castle Link for my helicopter CC speed controllers.  When it gets in, I'll hook it all up and see what happens.
